This is my first post here! I’m not sure if I’m putting this thread in the right spot, but I hope this is okay.
Today’s new and improved playroom setup! I posted looking for advice on several rat forums and groups and these are the improvements I’ve made so far!
To add height I moved the table to the middle of the room and added multiple levels to jump onto. They love climbing on terry cloth but it has a lot of strings, so I only use it in the rat room where I can monitor them and be sure they don’t ingest any— I still use it sparingly though just in case. I also found a few DIY hacks for stairs and ladders. I zip tied two hemp-cloth bags around the top of a milk crate so they could climb up top and have a comfy landing zone. I’m not sure if they’re going to actually be able to get up to the table yet, today’s play time is a trial run!
I tried to make the space as messy as possible by filling it with lots of different materials and rat-safe fabrics. Texture is key, so I make sure to add a nice variety of options. It doesn’t look the most appealing to the eye, but your rats will much prefer it!
I created “trash” dig boxes made up of paper bedding and other rat safe items, mixed in with some of their homemade food. I currently only give them a small amount of it exclusively during playtime because they are the definition of selective eaters— oxbow only in the rat cage!
I also added some “treat piñatas” and bags with yarn and some natural tissue paper. I added a combo of oats and both berry/cheese yogis to encourage them to seek out their treats and forage! I also added some stringed whole grain cereal to the mix, but only one because they would probably eat an entire box of cheerios if given the opportunity.
I provided multiple hides and boxes of natural paper substrate and ripped paper towels so they can nap and nest at their leisure while still being sure playtime is safe. To ensure safety I cover all outlets before letting the ratties in to play. It is important to mention that the heater along the floor is completely out of order and unplugged. If it’s too cold in the room I bring in a space heater for a half hour before playtime to warm it up— if you do this, you MUST remove the heater before letting the rats out. They take a long time to cool down sometimes so removing it entirely is the safest bet. I also roll up fabric and jam it under the door— they can’t even fit their heads under it, it’s just an added precaution.
I’m avoiding cat trees at the moment because my girls have been caught trying to scarf it down.
Let me know if you have any critiques or advice!
