Rachel was freeranging and managed to get up between the two cages and get Moses through the bars.
The front of his face - his nose is half ripped off his face.
Called the emergency vet who said he couldn't do anything.
Trying to stop the bleeding.
I think the blood is going down his throat.
and he is in a lot of pain.
Open mouth breathing and spraying blood.
Bubbling from his nose ....

Oh my god Holly I'm so so sorry...

I don't know what pain meds you can give him as you don't want to give him anything to thin the blood...

If his mouth clears of blood maybe you could try getting some fluids in him with some vitamins (like vitamin K) to replenish the lost nutrients in the blood? I'm not sure...

Do you feel comfortable taking a picture and sending it to me? It might not be as bad as it looks and an "impartial observer" so to speak might be able to give you another look at it.

sorry can't get a good pic.

bleeding on the outside of his face seems to have almost stopped. Edit: Nope slowed as still getting blood on me.
I used a cold cloth held against it as much as possible.
Moses is breathing through his mouth and making noises when he breaths.
Open mouth breathing looks somewhat like a rat in respir distress.
Holding him since this happened and petting him.
Moses has lost quite a bit of blood.
Trying not to stress him more then he already is.

Basically the skin and tissue on his nose has been almost ripped off his face.
I think his nose underneath is ok.
His mouth does not seem to be damaged

It doesn't look as bad as I was expecting, if that helps?

I'm not sure there's much you can do, besides wait. I'm glad the bleeding seems to have subsided. As I said, try to get some fluids into him, replenish his nutrients because of all the lost blood. Maybe something like Gatorade or Pedialyte might help?

He could have inhaled blood, which would mean fluid in the lungs, so you'll have to watch for respiratory issues. He might have to breathe through his mouth for a bit until the nose clears of blood.

Make sure you keep him nice and warm, too, as his body temperature might drop due to the blood loss.

Edit: Is there bone sticking out? Does the wound go that deep? Do you think his nose is broken, or maybe airways collapsed?

Not that you want to think about this but... does the e-vet know how to properly euthanize a rat? :(

Edit 2: I just saw your edit to your post, so that answers my first couple questions.

The e-vet will pts according to my instructions if it comes to that.
Afraid to try to give fluids orally as he will likely fight and not take any in ... like he has been doing with the formula over the last few days.

Going to run the cloth under cold water and try again to apply pressure to the side of his face.
Will heat up a snuggle safe for inside the cage.
will try to offer fluids ....

That's a good idea, the Snugglesafe.

I'd definitely wait to give oral fluids but he'll need it sooner rather than later to replenish what he's losing in blood.

Offer a saucer of fluids in the cage, maybe? And show him where it is.

Edit: I don't think he's at the point where he needs to be PTS, I was just asking to see if it was an option, just in case. It doesn't sound like the wound was THAT bad... just lots of blood and possibly aspirating blood... still not good at all but better than broken bone sticking out of his face.

He has a saucer of soy infant formula in his cage.
I can add one of rehydration fluid if you think that would be better .... no pedalite etc but can make up the homemade one.

I would offer both - at this point it's not going to hurt, right? And he's probably going to need the extra fluids.

Ohh SQ! You have no idea, my heart is beating a mile a minute here. Poor Moses! You have had nothing but ups and downs over the last few weeks, I think it's time you catch a break hun! Sending prayers, good thoughts, healing vibes and tons of hugs to you and Moses. My gosh, the poor baby.

And for photos, I find putting the setting on the highest megapixel, taking a normal picture from a distance and then copping it once on the computer works well for showing details. Hope this helps!

Thanks ... I am so glad all of you are here.
I think Rachel probably got him with a toe nail.
Eve and Aaron are quite upset.

Bleeding seems to have pretty much stopped.
Moses is burrowed into the crock of my arm next to my body and is fairly quiet.

The bleeding has stopped.
Moses licked some formula off my finger and he has now gone in the cage under a blanket next to the snuggle safe with his brother.
Hopefully he will be ok.
There are two saucers of fluid in the cage and I showed them to him.

So glad the bleeding has stopped. thats one hurdle down.
I think he'll be okay now.
Me at the boys are keeping him in our thoughts tho. I hope he sleeps well. That will help for sure.

Okay. Now you can breathe, Holly.

You're doing all you can. He's got his bother, warmth, and access to saucers of fluid... it's up to him now. Poor baby. Give him gentle kisses for me. And Aaron and Eve too, though they don't have to be gentle! haha.
