Al moves around a lot better than Loki does. Loki is still in pain you can see it ... I know they both had really hard surgeries because there was so much fat in there to remove from them both. they are eating well and drinking. I have them both on metacam, baytril and doxy.

Don't forget that swelling and bruising peak on day 2. If the surgery was Friday, then it is normal to have more swelling today. Hopefully after today things will start to subside. The bruising may become more evident as the colours change. I would expect more bruising if there was a problem with bleeding.
I hope your boys continue to improve and start feeling better. Keep them on pain meds if they seem uncomfortable.

Thanks for that...it would make sense...it puts my mind at ease a bit.. ironically outside of the abscess I haven't saw a bad incision so I question everything I see.

Well Dr. Kryder called me this morning. He said it was a fully functional testicle. Seriously I am damn lucky I didnt have a ton of babies. Part of it was dying off like Templetons so that means the Frankenstein vet cut of part of his as well. Seriously can you imagine the pain?!?!?! to have part of your testicle cut has to hurt a lot worse than having just the whole thing removed. I swear it angers me so bad. I am not sure what is worse that she cut part of it off one in two of my boys or leaving a whole one in there. I am just beyond disgusted at this point.

It must of the been the pain/abscess that they had that saved me from having tons of babies.

I cannot understand how Al had both removed, but My two blue boys did not. After seeing them in their natural glory, they are kinda hard to miss....

Wow, just wow.....
I have seen a rat neuter. It's not that complicated. Maybe she's got a substance abuse problem. Or a vision problem. All I know is she shouldn't be practicing veterinary medicine. What else has she screwed up?

she isnt that old. She is a younger vet, Graduated in 2004. You would think it would be fresh in her mind still. It is beyond me, I want an explanation how she did this to my boys. That is why i am sending the letter to her as well as the board. So she knows what her insurance company is telling me.

Wow. I just cannot believe it. And you're right- neuters are not that complicated!! I know it is different, even by size, but my father has horses. My step-mother helps take care of them, gives meds, and cleans/heals the minor wounds/whatever. Although she dosen't do it because she's scared, she's allowed and educated to perform neuters on the horses right on our farm. We don't have an operating room, and she has no form of a veterinary license, but she can do it right at home. I haven't seen a neuter done on a rat, but I have seen one done on a horse right outside in the hay. The whole process of waiting for the horse to fall asleep took longer than the operation, witch lasted maybe 3 minutes total. We never had any problems or anything, or a testicle left over!!!

But then again, a rat's testicles and a horse's testicles are like comparing grapes to watermelons. And not as many people own rats as horses, so I understand why you may be unsure or skeptical about performing neuters on rats. But when that happens, you shove your ego and your honor up your greedy butt, and say; "ma'am, I'm not sure about my skills on rats. How about I direct you to a vet that has done this procedure?" instead of seeing the wallet and claiming to know all the knowledge there is. And if you fudge up, you apologize.

Add:
Also, it's not like you stack three rats on top of another and do the surgery to all at once. If she didn't figure out that she hasn't a clue before starting the surgery, she sure as hell did when she got done with the first rat. Why would you continue onto the other two?!
Personally, I think she just wanted money, and didn't think you would make a big deal if your "dirty, stupid, worthless" rats had problems.

That first vet's license should be revoked or at the very least, she should be disciplined and her license suspended. Her actions were inexcusable. And I am very sorry that you and your boys had to go thru that ugly ugly mess.

How are your boys doing today?

Loki finally seems to be recovering. I think because of all the stuff they had to do to him it was harder. Al still has some swelling there. He did say it was a lot of fat he had to cut out of him. I keep hearing how that makes it more painful to recover with. They are eating and doing fine, running around the cage and enjoying their snuggles with their girls.

The state will do something to her. The complaint will be in the mail when I send the rest of this out. I am beyond being annoyed. I seriously cannot imagine or cannot figure out what she has done to them. I really wanted all the information from all the boys repair before sending it out but I guess I have to deal with just 3 so far. It is better than just one, that was damaging enough but to let them see she did this to two of my boys, is unreal.

I wish you a Board that has much common sense!

Maybe if you mention that there are X other rats you own who are going to have surgeries to fix her f-ups, that might add a bit more weight too.

It really is totally appalling... and sickening. My Mom says her heart goes out to you for this (I told her the whole story, she almost lost her lunch and then started railing against that vet like she rails against High Park - and them she would cheerfully chase with a pitchfork!).

Aww such a sweet image. I would gladly watch anyone chase her right about now LOL

It is the state board that does the licensing for Indiana. It goes to the consumer board, then they will forward it directly to the veterinary board. So it is a big deal. I did put in there that I still have two more rats that need repair and I am including the photo of Finley abscess from it.

I got a very good explanation of the neuter from her when I picked up my crew and said our goodbyes to Fred.

she said there are two types of neuters. Open castration and closed castration. Open they leave the part untied. She said that works for most larger animals, she said it is recommended to use closed for small animals. if you leave it open then it can pull through like my boys did

She said that in most rodents, guinea pigs, and small animals it is recommended to use the closed one. I guess how their testicle retrack or sit there. The void that is caused when the testicle is removed can cause the part to fill up with fat, which is why you stitch up the part right...Kinda like cutting an umbilical but stitching the end off instead of leaving it open.

She showed me in detail with a rubber glove on her hand made perfect sense and explained how they keep getting neuters.
