My boys just got prescribed Metacam along with their baytril, doxycycline and bene-bac. 'Round the internets, though, I've noticed that it has some bad side effects, including death

Can anyone help dispel this myth? I haven't given any to my boys yet (they were supposed to start last night), as I want to make sure it's safe.

thanks!!
sarah, slava and little rat

ps-- That was from me... somehow I have signed up for two accounts :panic: oi

Question still stands, and I would really appreciate any help!! Thanks :)

Metacam is an anti-inflammatory sometimes prescribed to ease respiratory symptoms (wheezing, congestion, etc.) associated with pneumonia while antibiotics are taking effect. As with most medications, it has potential side effects, but these are rare and they should be outweighed by the benefits they provide. Your vet probably prescribed to make your ratty more comfy while they recover.

I've given Metacam many times, sometimes at very high doses, and have not had any problems but that's only my experience and I only give it if absolutely necessary.

If your rat is having difficulty breathing I would try the Metacam to see if it helps. Also, make sure you are not giving the Bene-Bac at the same time as the antibiotics, or you will reduce the effectiveness of both.

My cat has been on metacam for the last two years for her arthritis and Ruby my rat is now on it too for her URI as well as baytril. She has .28 of a ml of metacam each morning.

Which med are they refusing? a fairly recent thing I found is to nuke a bit of peanut butter till soft and mix the meds with it (and drop of chocolate syrup if you have it). Meds are a treat! long as there's nothing in the peanut butter to counteract that med...

it's actually the metacam that they're refusing. they LOVE the strawberry flavored baytril and for whatever reason the bene bac is also a big hit. as for the doxycycline i give it with cool - whip as per the suggestion of the thread with big eyes and grabby hands all around. :giggle:

but this metacam is really causing a problem. the first night i tried to see if they would take it alone (like the baytril and benebac). they ate a bit and then started to choke, so i laid off. last night i tried cool - whip and vanilla soymilk with no results, i tried to add a bit of honey and water (so to keep it thin), and i got eyes that could only be expressed by a two word phrase that is not to be repeated in polite company. they're looking better, but the vet insisted that they take it.

what about banana baby food, chocolate syrup, metacam AND vanilla soy milk to thin it down? so much decadence they'll never know what hit 'em!! :wallbang:

With Metacam, so far I've had success with watered down strawberry syrup... really sweet, but not too sticky. Some syringe training with just a treat in the syringe may help too. Good luck.

Yup, works wonderfully for my girl Beatrix who is taking metacam at the moment.

It has an awful sickly-sweet smell. No wonder they hate it. When I've just had to give a drop I've smeared it on their "lips"; if they are getting other meds it gets mixed in with my meds-disguising mash: mashed banana with a bit of peanut butter, strawberry Nesquick, and baby cereal.

I just tried strawberry syrup watered down with a bit of vanilla soymilk.... but the second they catch a whiff/taste of the Metacam that party is OVER! I tried it and couldn't taste the medication, so I'm assuming that it gives them a weird feeling on their tongue. Slava kept licking his chops afterward and making a smacky-lip-sound (it's a bit like the sound a baby makes when the way to suckle) and little rat drags his chin on the ground like he's trying to get something off of his lower jaw.

The vet said I should try to get some in, and I'm a-tryin', but the medication flavorings/disguises are about to start costing more than the meds themselves!!! :thud:

Sweet potato baby food!

In anything the meds need to be REALLY well mixed or they will FIND IT MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH!!!
