Let me just start with, I don't want to hear a bunch of, "Take her to the vet, take her to the vet!" Because I can't. Believe me, if I could get her to one I would, but it's pretty much impossible. So I need to know if anyone else has ever had this issue because I can't seem to find the symptoms anywhere online.

Now I know about the red prophyn and what not, but my rat, in less that 8 hours has gone from completely 'normal', and by normal I mean never any red gunk, no wheezing or sneezing etc etc.. to having a completely blood red 'stained' nose as well as all four of her paws. AND there's a patch of fur missing from her back leg.

This isn't the first time this has happened to one of my rats, and I couldn't get her to a vet either and she died a few days after all this 'blood' started to appear.

Any lung sounds? Is the red porphryin crusted on her face or just a little on her nose? How old is she? Has she ever been sick before?

She's never had any strange sounds from her chest, and she's been fine. I tried to wipe off all the red stuff but the cloth always comes away clean and her paws and nose are still just as red. I'm not sure how old she is, not over a year though, she is still young. And she's never been sick before. The pet store we even got her from has a very good reputation for pets. They only carry about 4-5 rats at a time, so they all get looked after.

Why can't you take your rat to the vet?

I live about an hour away from the closest city, up in a mountain ski/mountain bike resort since I work at one of the hotels. I have no car of my own, or license to drive a friends. And no one will take me into town because they all think she's just a 5$ rat and I can get a new one.

the petstore doesn't mean anything, its just a holder and purveyor of rat mill rats usually. How they care for badly bred rats is moot.

Her nose is a a bit crusty or she has a full muzzle/face of red staining? The forelegs have red staining on the inside of them? If so, that is from grooming transferance when she is scrubbing over her head. Also, what colour is she?

Can you take a pic?

I can. I'll post it up here as fast as I can. Please wait.
And nothing is crusty. It's all soft and fine, no crust.

There's her face and paws. Her nose should be a very light pink, and her paws should also be a very light pink. I try to wipe her face and paws, but the cloth always comes clean. This all just started happening in the last 6 hours.

That open sore also appeared in the last 6 hours.

Does it smell? Is she scratching? How long have you had her? Are the red parts warm to the touch?

Nothing smells bad, nor is she scratching. I've had her for about a week and a half now. And I can't tell.. she's warm all over :p

Perhaps an allergic reaction to something...

Can you give us a bit more information about her environment? Cage, bedding, food, etc.?

Does she have any cage mates?

She has one, but they've been together longer than I've even had them. The lady at the pet store said she's had the to together weeks before I picked them up. They've never scrapped and they only cuddle and clean each other.

Her cage is just a standard two levels. I feed her the universal rat/mouse feed, and her bedding is;

(didn't know how to describe it)

The sore is dry, and not oozing.

Her cagemate is fine, no oozing, no red patches no noting. Completely fine, as far as I can see.
