Wow, that's a really good price! I looked into Mazuri and they don't do international shipping. :( Good rat food is impossible to find here. Mazuri is the best brand I've been able to find and it is the bad one with too much protien. Why, oh, why? :gaah:
I don't understand why Mazuri even makes one with too much protein. If they are so keen on rattie's nutritional needs, shouldn't they know how much protein is good? And why does the breeder formula have LESS protein than the standard diet?? Aren't pregnant does supposed to have extra protein? It just doesn't make sense! :rant3:

Oh, okay. So I may as well go with the Oxbow then. The money I'd spend on shipping for Oxbow balances out with the gas money I'd spend driving to Seattle. They'll end up costing the same. Both are good foods, so I may as well avoid the long drive and passport hassle of going to the states.
Good thing a 40lb. bag will last awhile! I calculated that I'd actually save money per year buying 40lb. bags of $100 food as opposed to buying 2lb. bags of $9 food.
Eeeeeexcellent! :D

Did you ask Mazuri if they have an suppliers near you? I pick up mine at Ren's Pet Depot in Oakville, but they also supply a lot of other things, like the zoo, and all their varied animals, other breeders, etc.

The Mazuri 6F is 16% protein, the standard Petsmart Mazuri is 23%. But do not forget that Harlan Teklad still offers the 8604 which is 23% as well. The purchaser has to make the choice.

Good luck with the Oxbow, all I keep hearing is my rats loved it for the first week, and now refuse to eat it at all.

Yep, Oxbow can be tricky... I use it as a supplement only because my rats will only eat it if they are super hungry. So if you offer a grain mix with your, chances are the rats won't touch the Oxbow. They may at first because it's all new but they may stop. :(

That's true, I frogot to ask Mazuri if they have any Canadian suppliers. :)
It's not too late, I haven't orederd the Oxbow yet.
I do give my rats a grain mix, but I don't mix it with their blocks. Heh heh, they won't touch the blocks they have now if I mix their grain mix in with them. So I give grain mix seperately in a different bowl a couple times a week which they gobble up, and then they just have their blocks to eat all day until I give them their dinner veggies and stuff. Then they only have blcks to eat overnight, too.
SO, even if they don't really like the Oxbow, I feel pretty confindent they'll eat it, because the little buggers won't have much of a choice.
Hee hee, sorry ratties, but I'll get good food into you wether you like it or not! (I hope that doesn't sound cruel, lol.)
However, now I'm going to email Mazuri and ask if they have any Canadian suppliers near me. :)

Wheeee!
I didn't even have to email Mazuri, they had a list of Canadaian distributers on their website, and there is one close to me!
Thank you Shelagh!!!! :D

That is what I thought! I fed only Oxbow for awhile... I don't even give a grain mix. I figured they would eat it because it was the only thing they were getting. After a few months it became very apparent that all were losing weight, one girl lost 50 grams on the regal rat...

I say try any food you want, but don't be stupid like I was and pay $120 for a 40lb bag before you are sure your rats like and are doing well on it. LOL I threw out about $50 of food. Buy a small bag first!

you need to be careful with rat food. Many of them contain preservatives which are cancer causing.

I feed my boys Oxbow Regal Rat and INNOVA Senior Dog Food. INNOVA is a holistic dog food which was recommended to me by Michelle from Small Angels Rescue.

I can tell you; the boys go nuts over it!!! There are only a few shops which sell it and you cannot order it online. Below is the link where you can locate a pet shop, in your area, which sells it. They sell in the U.S. and Canada only.
