Also, he is cuddling up with me right now. Bruxing hardcore and eye boggling!

Is it loud and grinding? If so, that is pain. When is his appointment?

It's more like his normal super-happy bruxing (it was when I was rubbing the top of his head) and stopped after I put him away, going in a little over an hour.

Oh good on all counts...he's probably thrilled to get rid of that horrible appendage of his. :D

Just got home from Orca's vet visit (after a quick stop at Petsmart for some treats and a new chube tube).

The vets (two actually worked on him at once to speed up the surgery) said that he looks great (very little swelling and site looks good). He's got 10 days more of antibiotics and she also dosed up little syringes with Buprenex to help with the pain.

I made him this sort of girdle thing with soft felt on the outside and some stiffer felt inside that secures with velcro around his middle and it prevents him from bending to pick at his very large incision, but he can still eat, drink and groom his face.

Much better!

You might expect Pica behaviour (eating and chewing things they normally do not touch) from using the Buprenex as its an opiate and sometimes has this effect on rats.

hmmm...what are the effects on humans?

You're not allowed to take your rattie's medicine!!!!!
It's an opioid so your rat is not allowed to operate heavy machinery or perform tasks which require mental alertness.
It produces CNS depression, so don't let him drink liquour with the medicine either.
Lots of side effects; it's a drug you don't want to use for any length of time.
I just read this thread for the first time. I'm glad he came through the surgery OK. It looks like that foot really needed to go. I'm sure he'll be much happier without it.
BTW, I also have never used an E-collar for my ratties. They chew out the odd stitch, but have never opened up anything.

I'm glad to hear he came through the surgery well. Sounds like he's much happier without that infected leg to deal with! Thought I'd mention to check that he's able to clean his nether region okay with the body cast thing on -- you might be doing this already... but it's worth a look-see once in awhile if you haven't to make sure things don't get blocked up. I hope with the pain meds and antibiotics he's back to himself in no time.

This sounds like a much better alternative to the collar, can you post pics? Just make sure you're not preventing him from occasionally grooming his nethers, that can get nasty. :sick2:

I'm aware, we've been cleaning him up...

How's your boy doing today?

He seems a little depressed on account of the restricted movement of the girdle but he's still very happy when I come up to his cage with a yogi or blue berry. I gave him a t shirt last night that our girls destroyed and he burrowed on in and has been there most of the day.

Ditto! If he's under supervision, I would take it off to give him a break. He may not pick at the incision at all. Or only a little bit...

So Orca is with a friend who also has rats now as we leave for vacation tomorrow. He went back to the humane society yesterday because his incision was looking, "funky". It's infected and they flushed it out and gave him a shot of penicillin and they put him on a stronger anti-biotics. I said goodbye to him to just in case I don't get to see him again. Ashley signed paperwork for surgery and euthanasia. Thankfully the friend is also a humane society employee so she'll know what is going on and ultimately what's right for Orca. The most comforting and optimistic thoughts I have are that Orca is totally himself his personality is bright and affectionate. I think I'm coming back to my little man no problem.

That is wonderful and yes setbacks can happen like this, it was major surgery, but if he's bright and "himself" then it was worth it.

Have a good vacation and our fingers will be crossed for Orca at the Shack to have no more problems.

Quite the ordeal little Orca had to go through, but I'm happy to hear he's on the mend. Not sure how long your vaca is, but I hope you come back to him just as happy as you left him as!

So Orca is having his last surgery tomorrow. While we were away he developed what the vet thinks is an abscess behind his eye. They will remove it tomorrow...this has pretty much put us back into the original boat especially since he's still his lovable self but tonight we will spoil him rotten and he will have surgery tomorrow. It will be his last, if anything else happens from here on out we will help him cross the bridge.
