We've had three rats, all brothers, for just over two years, but recently they've started fighting a lot. We've been debating seperating them temporarily, but when I came home from work today, one of my rats (****er) was visibly injured with dried blood on his face, forearms, and paws. We gave all three rats a bath, but mainly to assess how bad ****er was hurt. He seems to be having difficulty breathing, his eyes stay half-lidded, and he's hiding now (even when we hold him, he burrows his face into the crook of an elbow to hide). I'm incredibly worried about the cuts to his face and wonder if he should be seeing a vet or if this is normal rat behaviour. I'm including a picture of the injury to help with any assessment.

His fur is still a little damp, but we're drying him with a towel and keeping him bundled so he's comfortable... I'm incredibly worried as I know rats tend to live for 2-5 years, and he's really been acting his age this last week, this injury just is compounded on top of that.

All vets are closed as it's 2am, but I've made the decision to see the vet first thing tomorrow morning. The Oshawa Animal Hospital has a vet who handles what they refer to as "pocket pets"...

Wish us luck, ****er isn't doing too well.

Poor little guy, that looks painful. Let us know what the vet says and I hope ****er (love the name) feels better soon.

Do you know which rat is instigating all the fighting?
to me, his face doesn't look *that* bad, and rats heal super fast. It does sound like he is really stressed out though.

actually, upon further inspection and deeper cleaning, he has no cuts, so I think this is porphoryn :\ Went to check up on him about an hour ago to make sure he's okay, and it's caked all over again :( Vet will see him first thing tomorrow.

Yes ****er needs to see a vet. One of my boys Calvin had similar injuries around the nose and he was having breathing issues and a good amount of swelling. Please keep us updated.

I was going to say... it looks like porphyrin and no cuts at all. But that amount of porphyrin is not normal.
Have you noticed other symptoms with him? I too agree, a vet visit will be good.

If they've started fighting after all this time together, I would check if one is sick or if they have mites. Good luck with ****er, love his name.

Are you absolutely sure that they are fighting? Have you seen them really go at it? Maybe they're not fighting at all.
It could be that he has a myco flare up or pneumonia, and all this porphyrin is from his nose/lungs. That would also account for his change in behavior.

My guess was right, was porphoryn. He has a respiratory infection and was recommended some drugs (Doxycycline and Baytril), the doc was even shocked by the fact all three brothers of the litter have lived to 27 months, but is a rat lover himself. Was recommended to him as he's the only rodent vet in the area and he was fantastic. We cleaned up our boys face, are going to use the cool mist humidifier by his cage, and keep an eye on him for the next while. Wish us luck :)

Very shockingly less than a few hours after receiving his meds, he was running around.. he's still breathing heavily, but we used a damp Q-tip to get away as much of the porphoryn as possible. He's just sleeping right now. Here's hoping for the best!

Just a pic to show how different ****er looks now that he's feeling better :) He's grooming again, still a little tired, but a lot more active than before, and the harsh breathing has really quieted down :)

We <3 our ****er
