If you do a search on google it comes up, its a paste you can buy. At work right now but I will run a search when I get home and post the link for ya.

Thanks, I'd appreciate that ... I'm not sure if the google results I'm getting are the right thing or not!

I am open to using any kind of alternative remedies though, I've found some to be very effective, so I'll try anything!

Maybe start her on a low range dose, see how she reacts before making it a part of a regime?

I guess that would be the way to go. I'll have a word with my Vet about it ... it's kinda ringing a bell, I think she may have mentioned it in the past.

Gretchen has been diagnosed with staphylococcus intermedius (staph) and her skin looks like your picture no 1.
We are treating her with Cephalexin. We are on day 6 and so far we didn't see much improvement, but it's something you can try (I didn't see it in your list)

Selene contracted Pyoderma (possible false negative on staph with biopsy) and we just used baytril and metacam for pain. It took months and her skin stayed scarred but she recovered :)

To my knowledge griseofulvin is oral only.... it concentrates in the skin and hair after being given orally though. But it also takes 6 weeks to work, so you woudn't know for at least a month if it is even helping.

That poor girl. I hope she isn't in pain, that looks nasty. :(

We treated Gretchen with Baytril for 2 weeks because of some sneezing and while waiting for the result of the skin swab. We then started her on Cephalexin. She didn't show any sign of improvement with Baytril but it sounds like that sort of skin problem can only be resolved with long antibiotics treatments ... :(

Ratgirl@RatRitz I hope you'll find a remedy for your girl's skin soon...

The poor sweetie!

I don't know anything about fungal infections in rats, but I do know that Griesofulvin is an oral systemic fungicide that is used for people whose fungal infections are resistant to topical treatments.

There are a lot of people with chronic athletes foot, whose toenails get thick and yellowed, for whom griesofulvin is the only option. It does have some risk in humans (can't recall whether it was liver damage or depression of white cell production), so it's probably used only when other things have failed.

Owwwwwwww........

That looks terrible! Looks like your getting good advice so far though, and I sadly have nothing to relate. I've never had a rat show any kind of skin problem anywhere near that bad.
We did have one of our dogs turn up with a bad rash under the fur, but it ended up he was allergic to his food. He scratched himself raw on his belly and it kind of looked like your baby, all scabby and red. But that was allergies, not fungal.
Good luck though, I hope you find something that works! She seems so sweet.

Thanks everyone for all the comments and suggestions! Greatly appreciated! :D

I am working on a new treatment regime, hoping to combine elements from both oral and topical treatments, and am looking into a biopsy too.

Unfortunately I've had a resp outbreak over the past few days, and have been very busy keeping on top of that, now I have that under control I can get back to trying to sort her out (again!  )
