I checked in on her yesterday, it seems to be looking better although, Nic doesn't seem to think so. If she's not better in 2 weeks, she's going in to see our exotic vet... vets really shouldn't be allowed time off work. lol

Okee dokee... I'll update on Wendy since Nickelrat hasn't.

We took her to vet.

Although it could be a mass or injury, my vet has been reading up more and more and it seems that rats with prominently bulging eyes with myco could be from the result of lung abscesses or lung tumour which has decreased the flow to the veins in the eyes which can then result in bulging eyes. She thinks this is what is happening with Wendy. So Nic has to continue treating the eye with the ointment, keeping it moist. She's also having her Baytril dose upped and adding Zithromax.

Keeping our fingers crossed.

Aww poor girl :(

I know, it really sucks!! But on a good note, she's still a happy little rattie, very active and loving. Just has very loud lung sounds but that doesn't stop her one bit. Go Wendy go! :cheer:

How interesting! Kisses to little Wendy.

her full sister Tia (from Corrie and Byron's third litter) developed a bulging eye very early in life. it kept getting bigger, the lens got luxated (not sure of the right term here), and my vet finally removed it because we were sure that eventually it would get too big for her to close it. The vet was not sure what could have caused it; he called to consult an exotic vet about it, but not much seems to be known about eye problems in ratties.

Tia does fine with just one eye. I really debated about the surgery because of the potential risk, but did it because i was concerned it might be painful and because I didn't want to risk it bursting during a minor injury.

So Wendy's eye could be from an injury, but the myco theory is interesting. Tia had a bad bout of myco after her eye had already enlarged.

Hope little Wendy is OK without surgery. :tumkiss:

Next time we see the vet I'm going to mention this.
My vet is very uncertain about an eye surgery as well, she told me it can be very tricky because of the way the veins are at the back. I wish I could remember the terms but they just go right over my head. lol

The risk with the eye surgery is that the blood vessels are too tiny to be sewed up, the way a vet could do for a dog or cat. They have to pack the eyeball to stop post-surgical bleeding. Also they have to be very careful not to nick any nearby major blood vessels.

I was very lucky with Tia. My vet did a wonderful job, and she recovered very well.

I do hope that little Wendy comes out of it OK. I wonder if her susceptibility to myco was from the awful conditions before her rescue. They were in a not-too-clean box with pine or cedar shavings, as I recall from Nefarous & SQ, and the apartment evidently smelled very bad (reeked of marijuana and cat piss, was a small dark basement apt with a snake tank and a couple of cats).

Wish I could be there to give little Wendy lots of banana mash and cuddles.

Hope little Wendy is doing OK.
Tia, Wendy's younger sister, developed her buldging eye between 5 and 6 weeks of age.
Sending Wendy and Holly kisses, cuddles and scritches from me.
