I am trying to find the link that says what meds are used for a PT and how much

can any one point me in the right direction?

it's pediapred or metacam? Is metacam also called meloxicam or is that something else?

I"m getting confused, a little bit stressed seeing my girl go downhill so fast

start giving her ensure, baby cereal and lab block crumbs to eat...she can lick that up. Poor lovey :(

is there any hope that steroids would help or do you think it's growing too fast to make a difference?

I've had success with Prednisone and Baytril in some of my rats. Good luck with your sweetie. It sucks when they're so young.

I just had a terrible thought- Evie, the one who has been flipping out and chasing Owen and Brenna and Smidgen,
she is Paige's daughter
born NOv 22 nd

is there any chance she's already got a PT starting and that's why she's acting like this?

unlike Paige, she's very small, and is almost as UN interested in food as Paige is interested in it

do you think I should try some melatonin for her?
Paige will start on pred tomorrow

I don't think that sounds like PT. Rats tolerate Melatonin very well (even at high doses) so it wouldn't hurt BUT if she does have PT and you need to put her on steroids, it may take some time for it to leave her system and the steroids to have their full effect.

PT can be familial but not always...for eg...the Sugarbabies, most had tumours, but only 1 of the 6 girls had PT (Pez)

She could be acting like this just because of the addition of the boys. I would wait til you actually saw symptoms before starting anything.

I guess I'm just so shocked about Paige having this at her age, I'm looking at ALL of my kids differently now

I do that to so don't feel bad. Every since I witnessed the owie stretches with Pikachu....now they all have them when they stretch when they wake up LOL I pick them up and start poking their tummies to make sure there is no pain. I have a lot of rats too so I am poking bellies all day LOL

A relaxed stretch is very different looking from an owwie...there's often a push out with one paw that is all relaxed and casual, possibly a yawn...an owwie they get this inward look on their face as they concentrate on the pain they are feeling inside.

this was from earlier today

she's going in the single level cage tonight to sleep next to me, I wish I could have her out on my bed but i've got two cats
:(

she's very weak. I got meds into her, and hopefully those will help slow this down

I"m sure she's lost wt, too, she was over a pound before, i know, way too heavy for a girl but she's always been so active, so solid, and now, she's limp and lumpy feeling and losing wt.

still loves eating though, and getting her face stroked along her cheeks

this is Paige today, sorry for the poor quality of the video, she's in a cat carrier and she's trying to eat cheerios (these videos are very short)

what you see at the start is her looking for cheerios underneath her, there aren't any there :(

http://youtu.be/lXS_ujOeigA

this is her grooming after eating- she falls over if she's not propped up in a corner like she is there in the carrier

does she look any better than the video from two days ago, or about the same or....?

here's a few photos too:

I had to take her out of the CN cage, the others are kind of walking all over her. I put her back in when I can watch them and make sure she doesn't get hurt- she does seem to drink more and eat more cereal when the others are all crowded around her (all my healthy rats are gonna be getting fat on the ensure and baby cereal though  :emb: )

she's happy to have her cheeks stroked but only at certain times, other times she keeps trying to throw herself out of my lap- what's up with that?

if i put her on the bed, she runs to the ends and throws herself off of that too (fortunately the mattress is on the floor and there's a pile of blankets at the end where she threw herself off)
she's not jumping, she's just sort of lunging off into space

she's very limp today and is losing wt fast.

but she doesn't seem distressed in any way.

how long does it take the steroids (pred) to work if they're going to?

Except for the wt loss, and being limper, she seems to be holding steady
her sniffling has gone away and there's a lot less porphyrin too

One of the funny symptoms of PT is they feel a lot lighter than they really are, that's partly due to the limp feeling.

I would put her back with her cagemates as much as you can, and maybe only pull her out to sleep. She won't care about being stepped on, its a rat thing LOL, and they will probably give her more comfort.

I haven't used pred on PT but if dex takes a full 24 hours or more, then I would say pred is 2-3 days.

ok she feels light but she's also lighter, I weighed her yesterday and she was down almost 20grams from when she was weighed for the meds doses (thursday) so that was in one day.

I haven't weighed her yet today but she looks smaller as well- she's like a floppy loose skinned version of her former healthier albeit overweight self. I'll get another wt on her soon, will her doses need to be adjusted downward?

ETA: just got her wt- she's 553 grams, down from 571 on Thursday BUT that's the same as yesterday so her wt is holding steady! :joy:
she sure does feel lighter though- she's so limp :(

she has a small (probable mammary) tumor too, sort of under one arm but not right up in the armpit like Hope's is (OT: Hope's tumor appears to be a double, that's one reason I have not brought her in for a surgery consult- the other reason is that it's extremely unlikely that vet will agree to do surgery on her- and I know the other one will only do surgeries on a rat under 16-18 mos old, Hope is two-ish- exact date of birth unknown)

anyway back to Paige, she's had three doses of pred, just how much could she improve?
