So!
Thursday night she started to have thin diarrhea, it was mostly just when I picked her up because I didn't see much of it in the cage at all. We went to the vet on Friday. She said that it was probably a chronic issue but that mega colon is a diagnosis of exclusion, so she couldn't say for certain what it is. They didn't do a stool sample or xray, just listened to symptoms and looked at her poop. She told me to keep her on the Woody diet but to add extra fiber because that helps the intestines maintain nerve impulses better. (??) She gave 5 days of Flagyl and said it should help clear up the diarrhea and the smell.
I've kept her on the Woody diet, bought the extras that I didn't have like soy formula, baby cereal & jar food, and extra veggies. The diarrhea had stopped by Saturday morning and now I am seeing a fair amount of very dark, strange looking stools. I think this is a good sign, like all the blockage is being cleared out. They are weird twisty turny poops. She's eating ok but not great. She likes cooked carrots and butternut squash, thinks the baby cereal and mashed potatoes are ok, won't eat the jar baby food sweet potatoes or lettuce, and will only eat the pears out of fruit cocktail. She acts like I'm starving her - I think she really misses the blocks. She never drinks water - but all the food I'm giving her has so much in it that i think it's probably ok.

I talked to Bella, thanks to Lilspaz! It really helped to talk to her. Thanks Bella! :)

Oh by the way, I dunno what changed or if the one re-intro session in the tub really worked wonders...when I had to take Barret out of Misty's cage I didn't have a spare clean cage so I tried to take the easy way out, not really thinking it would work. I brought him over to Theodore and Thriller's cage and let them smell him for a couple minutes while I held him. They seemed like they wanted him to come in so I let him take a few steps in...and they all just started smelling each other, sharing food, cuddling and sharing their house. They haven't had one fight and it's been almost 4 days! This is weird, but awesome. :) They're so cute together now. All three noses poke out at the same time when I say Hi.

Misty is an energetic, happy girl. I feel awful that she has to be alone now. I don't think she will be happy with just an hour or two of visiting her brothers each day.
Does anyone know another Woody's diet rat that would like to come live with Misty?

Poop pic.
Right- what the poops from the last 2 days look like
Left- tiny bits I had to disimpact tonight.
Don't know if you can tell with the lighting but they are almost black.

My vet also told my sister who's cat is having poop moving issues to be on extra fibre.

for a normal digestive system/colon this would make a lazy system work harder and "exercise" as such, I have to have extra figbre due to my IBS, but with megacolon it can shut it down as it will be unable to process the food and move it through.

Here's the forbidden food list on the Woody's Diet

Forbidden Foods
NO….
Lab Blocks
Dog Food
Spicy food
Gassy Foods
Acidic Foods
Cheese or milk
Fiber breakfast cereals
Bread

Black stools can be a sign of blood. It might be good for them do to a fecal occult blood test to make sure she's not bleeding. If she is, then it is something other than MC.
And I agree with Lilspaz, that fibre is a no-no in mega colon.

Yes, I agree too! Not that I have any experience with it but it seems like you would want less bulk. Vet said extra fiberb is best in the beginning, and then restricted as the disease progresses. Since she has already been impacted so much I think maybe this is the later stages of the disease. Bella told me that vets usually give similar advice to that of a cat with megacolon, but cats have completely different GI systems and a different cause for MC.
The poo looks like that of a person on iron supplements. I really don't think there is blood but I do wish the vet would've done a stool sample. She had enough of it! Lol

Since she was having diarrhea the first couple days before i added baby cereal and then it got harder and led to impaction, last night I cut back on that to just a couple small bites a day and increase the cooked carrots. Those seemed to really help her go. Her dinner was baby food sweet potatoes mixed with chopped cooked carrots, butternut squash, green peas, and peeled apple, with a few bites of mashed beans and rice baby cereal (made with formula) on the side. It's weird, before all this she loved apple and now she won't eat it.
This morning there is a much more normal poo in her cage. She doesn't seem sad but does seem bored and missing her blocks. She had a great time visiting with Barret last night. I'm not getting my hopes up, but as long as she's able to enjoy herself, I'm going to keep trying for her.

That makes sense.

Misty is doing well, physically anyway. I am seeing more of her own poops every day. She is energetic and looks healthy. She's still very disappointed with the food and is constantly begging. She loves playtime with the boys, but she spends most of the time digging through their litter box for old blocks or licking the block dust off of the pans. I've tried so many Woody foods but none of them satisfy her block cravings. I've been giving her 2 hrs in the morning and 2 hrs at night with the boys, but I still feel sad to see her in her cage alone. Am I doing the right thing?

Its not really a choice you made hun. Misty was going to die a painful horrible death if you didn't do this. You could've left her in there and she would soon be in too much pain to enjoy being with the boys...then you would've put to sleep probably a while ago now. She's not in pain any longer, and she's got her friends for 4 hours per day, and you for the rest of it, even if she's not fond of her diet. I would've done the same thing.

I just wish I could read her mind! I hope she does get used to the diet but the way it is now she acts like a prisoner :( she's gotten grabby with food and doesn't like to be picked up very much. I think that part will go away now that I haven't had to disimpact her in a while. A Woody's cagemate would really help her.

Its a rare thing to find a rat with MC that has mild enough symptoms to even attempt the Woody's Diet...so its highly unlikely you will find another one. She will be fine, its probably more your feelings of guilt and you are projecting it on to her. When I switched my entire crews from Suebee's to lab blocks, they acted like they were dying...now they snatch them like they are a treat. Give her time.

Your only other choice is to have her pts,
It sounds like she has fun with her friends and a pretty good quality of life,
if you put the boys in her cage, they would be searching for her food ....
I am sure she will continue to adjust.

Just curious, but why can't normal rats have Woody's diet, supplimented a few times a day (outside of the cage) with lab blocks?
If it were ok, then they could all live together.

I only skimmed the rest of this thread, but did anyone bring up lubricating supplements? When my two girls had growths that impeded bowel movement and caused obstruction Dr Munn advised me to add cod liver oil to their diets to help "move things along". My youngest brother in law has hirschsprung's disease which is essentially the human version of mega colon, as well as short gut, and his diet consists largely of greasy food. Just the thing that makes me fat keeps him alive. LOL. Also, because he absorbs so little of his diet naturally, he has to eat high fat and calorie dense foods. Obviously he's not a rat but as I hear more and more from people with animals with megacolon, a lot of the same rules apply.

That's right Moon. When Lady had a tumor on her colon the vet did say to give her olive oil morning and night. I was lucky she would just lap it up in a tsp. And she did get a good few months like that.
