Depending on her reaction after I take her off, I may have to pop her back on it and then wean her off at a later date..

Well, it's been [roughly] 24hrs since Penn's last Pred dose. She's acting Off again. I'm trying to remind myself that I have to give her time to go either way, and not just instantly jump on anything.. That's very difficult..

She's not as active as she was on the Pred, she seems to have some difficulty jumping and landing correctly, and she's having some small balancing issues. I have a wired rope perch for her to use to get into their decker, and she has problems balancing on the rope to get in. Nothing really major, but enough for me to notice. Her cagemate Grey, who has some dominance issues, is picking on her again. Penn's also started nipping me during playtime, which was something she did all the time [delicate side and back skin!], but had stopped while on the Pred. She's also taken to hunkering down and just sitting there. This morning I found her hunkered down in the litter box, something she's never done. Penn's a little priss with an OCD twist, lying on poo is not in her nature.

I'm going to give her today to go definitely one way or the other. I'll see how she's doing in the morning, and go from there as to whether or not I should start the Pred again..

Could it be the dose is not enough? Her body got used to it? Or is it too soon for the body to adjust?

I know Kat put her on a medium dose so I doubt thats it. It sounds like she may have to go back on again. Ffor how long...who knows :( Her sister died suddenly, so we already know the genetics are most likely against them.

It does sound neurological at this point...sigh.

She had improved alot while on the Pred, even for those 3 short days. I had her at 1.35mg/kg, which is the exact middle range of the suggested dosage on Ratguide. The Pred was just for diagnostics, to see if it helped. Apparently it did help, so now it's a matter of trying to figure out what exactly is wrong. There's only so much I can do to try and figure it out, especially if it is neurological.

During Penn's time off of the Pred, she was acting Off again. She also seemed to be having some problems with balancing and motor control. She was also starting to hang out of the hammock at odd/awkward angles.

So, she's back on the Prednisone. I've currently got her on a minimum dose, and it's helping alot. It seems I'm going to have her on this long term.

That's what Shelagh and I have come to, I think. My prior to cases of PT have been very quick. Within a night I had lost them. It sounds more like the PT I'm sued to hearing from Shelagh, where they go weeks with it. I guess I just know my rats well enough to maybe have caught it before she really started to show any major symptoms.

Its good you caught it at least, the pred helped Peanut for quite a few weeks when we realized she had a PT.

Give her kisses for us.

Just an update for everyone following Penn's saga..

She's currently taking .06cc of Prednisone once a day. She's been eating all of her meds like a real champ, too. She's still quite active, and is acting like a much younger rat.

She has started to lose some weight, though, and she's now losing conditioning across her hips and back end. You can start to see the definition of her hips and spine through that area..

*sigh* My Prissy Penns is getting old.

She's steadily losing weight, so I'm going to add some good foods to her diet. She'll be very happy to have her morning hot cereal again, I'm sure. She's still doing wonderfully otherwise, so I'm making the best of every day I've got with her.

Saturday will be her 19mo day, so we'll have some new party pics then.
