Last night started very well with the babies and their 2 teeny tiny momma's arrival with Crumbilina. They are sweet and sooo cute!

But sadly it degenerated very very fast. I noticed Eli was being pushy and aggressive to his cagemates and Jenny saw that he had some scratches on him, but I had the impression he had started it all. I pulled him out and he was scared and stressed but calmed down to explore on the couch between Jenny and I. Later on he was trotting around the floor like he always does, and came up to me like he always does...I reached down to scoop him up and next thing I know I have a huffing, Eli chomping through the side of my hand and not letting go as he dangled in the air from my hand. WTH???? He finally let go and came back looking for more!
My sweet boy has become RTR Evil Incarnate...he start rubbing and huffing, and I thought maybe I startled him, but when he got back on the floor and seemed calmer he came over to my pant leg and bit me again through the fabric...typical nasty male hormonal move. :undecided:

I eventually set up a small cage for him, and had to use a towel with a rat whipping around to really nail me...took a while but I got him in there.

This morning he came out let me pick him up, seemed OK, but then started huffing again. I will let Dr Munn know this huge change in personality. Does he need a neuter? I think so. Is it something more serious going on? God I hope not! :sad3:

I have 2 girls to pts today and its always a sad day for decisions you have to make like this BUT on top of it I was putting Lilith's daily drops into her eyes, when I brushed something rough on her face...

When you look at it, its less like a scab then the pics here, and you can see where shes been scratching it.

Poor Lilith.

Oh man... I'm telling you Shelagh, you are experiencing everything rats can get.
(((hugs)))

Eli is from RTR? Then it doesn't surprise me he's become hormonal. :(

First sign of aggression was after he came out of his seizure...I have had 6 months of sweetness. I think something went haywire recently. I am worried about him surviving a neuter but he's not happy right now, so I have to think of that as well.

Poor Lilith. I've had quite a few of those on my double rexes but it never got big like in those pics. The vet removed them and the rats were fine. Good luck with your sweetie.
I'm sorry for Eli but I did have Boss who went berserk biting his cagemates and us and it was neurological. He was neutered as well.

Sorry about the girls, Shelagh.

Oh Boy.... something's up with the little dude. :sad3:

Did he draw blood when he bit you? :(

Oh yeah, I don't consider anything a bite without some blood. LOLOL

My problem is that he has now become the most unhandleable hormonal male I have ever had, and I have had a TON of hormonals with the RTR rescue boys. A lot of those were bad but this is almost scary.

He reminds me of my boy Z. He used to do this, and a neuter didn't help him much - but he was happier in himself, so it did help in that way. He really couldn't have rat company, he attacked any rat, boy or girl, and me, during introductions.

He's over 2 now and in the playroom he'll come sniff me and get stroked, if I try touch him, he tries to pounce to get me - only reason he can't is his HLD. He used to do this though, pounce and bite as hard as he could.

Let's hope Dr. Munn can help figure this out! What an abrupt change! It's unreal!

Let's hope this didn't all start with the scritches I asked you to give him from me.... could you imagine? That would be awful!

OK so the results of my day.

Huron will be staying on theophylline added to his baytril/dox long term as its the only thing that helps (RTR boy)

Tepeu is having the theophylline added to her regimen and my vet made sure to give me enough for the other girls in her cage.

Lia will continue with her baytril/doxy and diluted baytril in her ear to conquer the long-standing ear infection.

Inca will need to have a lot more of her leg amputated. :undecided: Chelle, Graham and I are discussing this one.

And Eli...oh Eli. :sad-p: We discussed behaviours and timelines, etc, etc...and my vet feels that Eli has a tumor pressing on his brain and especially on the part that affects behaviors. No magic neuter for my boy to "make it go away", we don't want to put him through surgery especially since we aren't completely sure what's going on inside of him.

Not being able to see is probably making it all so much worse, but we are going to try behavioral meds (they were ordered today) and pray they help. IF they don't and he's an angry unhappy lonely blind boy who cannot be touched, I will have to have him pts. I am trying not to think that far ahead because the tears just start to flow and I can't see what I am typing anymore.

Oh Shelagh, I'm so sorry. Poor babies. Especially Inca and Eli :( What type of meds are you getting for Eli? It sounds like a crappy day all around :hugs:

Not sure, I kept hearing aminophylline but that's not it. I am pretty sure it starts with an A. I know he has used it on aggressive rats in the past. Do you think it's amitriptyline?

:gaah:

Oh goodness, poor Eli :( I'm sorry! I was so so hoping that a neuter would work for the poor guy.

:hugs: and fingers crossed that the behavioral meds will work.

How has he been since you got home?
