Hi thanks for letting me be part of your group. Here is my rat story. My daughter came home from school on Thursday cry about her class pet in Bio class. Wilbur is about 3 and a half months old and had been in the class since he could not be used in a science fair project because of his cleft lip (his other siblings were ok). Long story short she was attached to him (I had known this as she has had grad pics taken with him). The teacher could not take him home over the holidays as her cats would have been able to get at him as he is so small he was getting in and out of his cage. The teacher told my daughter he would have to go back to the pet store. But because of his cleft lip he prob would have been snake food :-S.

Well we now are owners of Mr Wilbur. We got him on Friday and on Monday he had a vet visit (Teeth trimming and teaching us how to do it) this morning as well. He is 90grams and the size of a small hamster. He not only has his teeth trimmed He was in a mess when we got him. He had an abscess that had just burst on his neck area. he has an eye infection and one of his top teeth were going into the roof of his mouth so he has a little hole. He is on oral antibiotics chlor palm 125 taking .18 ml 2 times a day for 14 days. I so want him to pull threw but I am also preparing my daughter for the worst as well.

These are not the greatest pics I will have to take new ones.

He is the cutest little thing. He may require a special diet for the rest of his life if he cannot chew lab blocks. I know you are already doing it. Looking at his face, I really had a cut lip in mind, but when you see the picture it is a bit of a shell shock! I could picture a cleft lip on a human but could not place it on a rat, now I can. Poor boy.

Does he have top teeth?

Is he able to eat lab blocks at all?

How does he sound other wise? do you hear sneezing is his breathing loud?

on the bright side the way his teeth are protruding looks like it would make clipping easier at least for the bottom ones.

I would most of the time for rats, it takes at least 30 days of meds to clear up anything. Why i am not sure that seems to be ongoing.

I am going to be rooting for this boy.

I think he will just because he made it 3 1/2 months with crappy care, and now he has good care! and us :joy: :cheeky:

What a sweet little boy :)

he actually looks like a little fellow named Monocle on another forum. I am going to re-read his thread or PM his owner for details on how he was able to help his little fellow. Monocle wasn't as small and unwell though.

I cannot wait to see how he does on the chlorpalm, if it helps that eye at all (worried about that one).

Bela are you able to take video of your little guy? It would help us to determine his overall health.

That is exactly who I thought of when I seen the picture. Was his cleft too or just cut?

D'awwwwwww, little boy
I really hope you can nurse him back to health. I would think that aside from a special diet, he should be able to live out his life normally. He might be more prone to pneumonia as he would be more likely to aspirate his food once in a while.
Once he is feeling better, I hope you will consider rescuing a buddy for him. Hmmm, that reminds me, I have 7 babies here that need a home! LOL

Oh Joanne, are you guys near each other? That would be wonderful for little Wilbur to be paired with a very socialized little buddy.

Wilbur looks like a strong boy. Wow, amazing that he's made it to 3.5 months. Any chance the vet might remove the teeth instead of constantly trimming?

what a precious little fuzz bundle.... :love6:

I hope he fully recovers! WOW... I have never seen a rat with a cleft lip! I agree with Shelagh though... that eye is worrisome. :sad3:

Kisses and scritches to the little guy. Tell him that he has a fan club sending LOTS of healing vibes!!! :bunnydance:

Oh my goodness, thank god you got that little boy out of that situation, it's wonderful to still see people out there who have such big hearts, especially for poor little ratties! I hope everything works out with little Wilbur, he's so lucky to have a home with you.

:hugs:

I adopted rescues with teeth problems and infected mouths/faces.
They all had god lives and I am sure this little guy will make it
He is a survivor.

Baby cereal mixed with soy infant formula fed by dish and in a needless syringe to the side of the mouth
will help him to gain strenght.
There are some great vets around that may be able to help the cleft once he is stronger, larger and recovered.

He will likely need to be on clorpalm for at least 4 weeks or longer

:hugs:

His eye is better not as swollen and that was by Monday night. The vet did tell us about removing his teeth as his top ones were so very long and one was in bedding in his roof of his mouth when she was trimming them. He is a busy guy when he is out of his cage. He has 3 humans (two class mates) visiting and playing with him at this moment. He loves popcorn and is able to chew that and even bite pieces off it. He has had yogurt cheese and baby food today, plus a clean cage again (2 times since we got him) we want him to be in a clean cage to promote healing. Once he is on his way to being healthy I am thinking of a buddy for him. My youngest daughter (13) has wanted on now as well for a few years. Thanks guys for all the info and encouragement. please keep your fingers and paws crossed for Wilbur.

this is great news!!

and I don't know about you guys, bbbbuuuutttttt I'm seeing a case of GGMR in the making...
:giggle: :giggle: :giggle:

bela, GGMR is gotta get more rats :) it's very common to suffer from that addiction on here!! LOL

Awwww! My heart did a little flip when I saw Wilbur's pics, despite his obvious issues, he is a real sweetheart! :thud: I'm sending a TON of healing VIBES Wilbur's way, cuz doggonit I'm gonna be part of the fan club for this little man!!

Reading your posts it struck me that you are somewhat of a 'natural' in caring for Wilbur!! What a great thing that is!! :hugs:

When he gets a little better I can see a little friend completing his circle.
