Another surgery UPDATE

If I had the opportunity to have a surgery on a tumour like that with Portia I would jump on it. Sadly Portia has a horrible immune system and would most likely die under anesthesia, and I would get charged the $300 plus for the surgery.

Sadly I have to watch my sweet Portia struggle through, and battle the weight loss now that the tumour is leeching her nutrients. She is still happy and I am watching and waiting for her to tell me when its time to go.

Lovley little Tevy, you keep fighting for all the girls that cannot have or won't make it through the surgery!

Fidget, I hear ya. The day we stop questioning is the day we conform to one thinking, and stop reaching.
It is food for thought for the rest of us.
I for one would definitely jump at the chance especially since the rat was healthy and the surgery was free.

Lise, how is she doing today?

I had to volunteer for Canadian Animal Blood Bank after school today which was a long made prior commitment, so I just got home and then went right away to make Tevy a smorgasbord of food. She is eating baby cereal but strangely is turning up her nose at everything else. Silly girl.

She looks to be doing pretty well, has a lot of porphyrin around the eyes and nose but I figure that is to be expected with the stress. She is active and exploring today though. :) Yay!!

I am going to leave the e-collar on for one more night and then hopefully tomorrow it will be healed enough that I can leave it off and her licking at it won't be a big deal.

Porphyrin is to be expected especially with an e-collar.

Of course, she can't clean it off properly with that. Thanks for pointing that out Jo.

I trid to take some pictures of her incision which is still pretty nasty looking, but none of them turned out. So you get cute pictures instead (oh darn ;)) She can still climb into the hammock and this is how I found her this morning.

What a sweetie!! She even climbed into her hammock for a comfy sleep.
She doesn't look 27 months, she's not pouffy, her eyes are bright, even her ears are forward. :D

So, glad to see Tevy is doing well.

I would have done the same thing if I were in your shoes. If it can be done, do it.

I to had a supposed exotic vet tell me that spaying was a waste of money and did not prevent anything. But the dog vet I go to now agrees that it will prevent tumors, so not all exotic vets are any better than dog vets. So far he has done two tumor removals and a neuter, with great success. Plus you take a risk with any surgery no matter the type of animal, things happen and it was just meant to be.

All right, I think Tevy is going to be just fine. Whoohoo. :)

I left the e-collar off all night last night, and the incision still looks good this morning. I think she ate the entire Harlan block I put in because unless she is a very good hider, I can't find any of it! lol

She must have been so happy to have the collar off that she spent all night grooming herself. Her fur is soft as a bunny this morning, it is not usually this soft.

She was my first 2 yr old rat, and now we are going to continue on the quest to have my first 3 year old rat. ;)

I think we need more pics of lovely Tevy please?

Of course! :)

This pic shows the other lump by her hind leg that I'm still not sure if it is another mammary tumor developing or a fat lump:

She has the couch all to herself right now, I'm leaving the cage open and have pillows/towels on the couch. She is having fun exploring. I can't even explain how happy she seems to be... I think she is glad to be rid of the tumor and be able to climb and explore well again.

And a cute head shot

I can't begin to explain how tough these little creatures are. She went from me being worried she was going to die, to being better than fine in just two days!!

Even better news.

My boyfriend agreed to let me set up the R-695 for Tevy (omg there is going to be no space left in our place LOL), so she can have her own rat palace. She is still way too active to be cooped up in a one level cage, and we don't want her living on/destroying our couch permanently. So this way she will have lots of space, but not have to live with the "rat bullies" in the FN.

Do you think it would be easier on her to have her cage put beside the other rats, so she can still see and smell them? Or would it be easier on her if she was across the room and less aware of them?

Unless she has out times with the others, then I wouldn't have the cages together.
It can be stressful to smell other rats and never get to put your mark on them, so to speak.

What a lucky gal, getting a whole 695. She'll definitely have lots of room to roam.

What a sweet bf you have. :cuddle:
