I'm in VA, about 8 hours from NY. I wish I had space for them. I wonder if there are enough members to rat train them down the coast, maybe foster them until you are settled in FL? I would be happy to help in any way I can, and don't mind the drive to NY (we make frequent trips there, actually), but I cannot provide a permanent home for them at this time, I'm expecting 2 or 3 rescue boys when they're old enough to be away from mama and won't have the space :(

I am also in Virginia. If someone can get them from New York to Baltimore (or closer) I can get them to Temblabamomo.

Well everything hit the fan Saturday morning. Her boys attacked each other and have deep bite wounds on their bodies and ones skin is ripped off his face right under his. Eye she refuses vet treatment and will not surrender them. Her aunt came to get them. I cleaned them as best I could and whipped up some antibiotics for them. So hopefully that helps. Police have been notified by her mother that her aunt is coming for the rats. She is only getting the boys. I contacted the police myself and they know she is only getting the 2 boys that are hers and are on my side because they know me. Her mom told them they're coming because I was gonna throw them out. The cops laughed when he told me that because everyone in this town knows to call me when they need help with animal rescue. I've rescued 14 kittens (hand raised them and found them all homes) 1 adult cat, 1 dog, and everyone knows me for having rats. ^_^ she's been threatening me and if her aunt tries anything officer Santiago just said to call him and he'll come deal with her. This girl is ridiculous!! Omg! Her and her mom call her Aunt (40 some years old) to come start crap?! I just don't get it?? And all the while I stayed calm and respectful just trying to help.
I don't know what's going on with the boys. I can only hope and pray for the best. But the girls are safe and are coming to Florida with us.

Wow, sounds like a real mess. You have confirmed that the girls will definitely be able to go with you to Florida? If so, that's awesome. I hope there won't be any setbacks such as funds or the girl returning and wanting her animals. Is the aunt going to keep the boys? I hope she is able to care for them and they can recover from their injuries. How awful.

It is a real mess. Yes the girl are mine to stay. I want her to try to take me to court! They are mine and the funny thing it 2 of the officer's here know they're MY rats as they have seen me with them before. :giggle: The aunt was just gonna bring them back to her house and leave them there from what I was told. This girl isn't even gonna be back till the 15th so god only knows what care they're gonna get. :sad3: we are taking the girls to florida with us with 2 extra we wont need to buy a bigger dog crate because the size 400 is big enough to hold 4 crates although we'll probably not need to buy another one and it will cost $88 more for the vet vs. $166 more.

I've taken rats that were being given improper care from someone I considered to be my best friend.

My advice- and maybe it is a little dishonest, is since you already had the rats in your care, I'd say that you can't bear to part with them. I'd cry on the phone about it. I would send her pleas over email about how you can't bear to give them up. I would refer to them as your babies. Be as ridiculous as possible and don't say a darn thing about her improper care, make it seem like she would be doing you a favor to be giving them to you, because you love them so much. Then talk about the face biting incident, if you still have them with you, tell her(even if you didn't do it...) that you took him to the vet, and had to spend several hundred dollars on vet care. Don't demand the money, but make it be known(in a very calm, no confrontational way) that you would like to be repaid, but that you would keep the rat instead of her having to pay you back(again because you love him so much)

Seriously, when animals or kids(those who can not speak for themselves) are at risk, the lines get blurred a little for me. You are saving lives, and that is worth a whole hell of a lot more than some hurt feelings or harm to a relationship with someone who neglects their animals to me. Especially if you are moving a plane ride away from that person.

This is so sad. What a mean person to do that but then I have known people to do that to their own flesh & blood too. I hope there will be a good outcome to this. I also hope that she will never own any other animal. Thank goodness they at have you at least for a respite.

I took on a ratty who was a rescue but in turn needed rescuing from the rescuer. He was not a well boy but he was such a sweetie right from the start. I never had a boy before & he got on well with the girls & got to be a daddy. All of the babies found homes & were the cuddliest critters ever. Had I known that I would lose him so quickly I would have kept one of the babies. A few months later one of my girls (my first one) died from a tumour. I held her right to the end so she would not be afraid or alone.

I guess sometimes having a short life is a good thing too.

Steal them, she probably won't even notice if you put some similar-colored fur in the corner of the cage. Let her keep refilling the bowls with her crappy oh-so-expensive food. :I

You could take them and rehome them.
