What is this thing on my rat's face?

It's been steadily getting bigger for a few weeks. He won't keep still enough to properly examine it but I managed to take some decent photos.

It seems to have disappeared of its own accord, though it made a bit of a comeback initially. Now there is just a slight red mark there. I'm none the wiser.

It did disappear completely, thanks for asking.

I can only assume it was a particularly oddly shaped scab from a wound that kept bleeding.
