This is really great because the more people do implants the more we can gauge how well it works. I'll be following the progress closely.

Vets need a special license for doing implants? I wonder why that is. Or is it to bring in the implants?

The way I understand it, the license is for bringing in the implants, and the cost is such that it isn't worth it to pay for the license unless the Vet is using a lot of them.

I'll post after the implants have been done, but am hoping to find a good home for my fosters shortly after the procedure is done, so I may/may not be able to report on health results as they age.

What are implants!

We're talking about the 4.7 mg Deslorelin implants. These implants are the equivalent to a chemical spay. There's more information on them (written by Victoria) in one of my previous posts:

and other posts on this forum.

The health benefits may not be identical to a spay, but it can be a good alternative. Like in my case, I believe it's the best way to go because we don't have many options in town for vets who will spay, and my girls will be up for adoption soon. I don't want to risk their lives. An implant is a very benign procedure. Very low risk. Just a little gas, small incision, and a bit of glue. It's done in about 5 minutes.

Oops.. I just posted an update under "Meet the Fosters" that should have gone here. Please see

for the results.

We went to Dr. Brieger in Montreal yesterday. First he addressed all our questions and concerns. He shared his expertise with us and when he didn't know the answer to a question, he would just say so. (I like that!)

We stayed with him as he gave each rat an exam, and weighted them. And then we left while he gave them the implants. We picked up the girls about two hours later. Dr. Brieger was monitoring them some after the process to ensure they were okay and not picking at the incision site.

The cost was exactly what was originally quoted. All the rats are happy and healthy, as if nothing ever happened.

We feel the drive was well worth it and are very happy with the results so far. I wouldn't hesitate to make the trip there again in the future, should we have new female rats.
