How's Beni, Shelagh?

Sorry for not updating earlier. Been busy with the other critters.

As you said No Miracles for Beni but he seems easier and brighter than before.

Normally I give him the lasix first and give him an hour to recover from gasping and stress before getting the Fortekor into him. Last night I popped him back in the cage after his lasix and he turned around to come back and check me out. No gasping :D
So I got the fortekor into him right away as well...a little stress afterwards but he did well. He's still licking me when I stroke his cheeks and I haven't been bitten once by the other girls with my hand in Their cage like that

I will attempt to look it up later but does anyone think I could add a titch of dex into his treatment to see if it helps the inflammation in his lungs? I would just pop it in with his fortekor dose. Another 3 days to see if it adds any more comfort.

Some of my silly ratties have all decided to sneeze and a couple are crackling (dang change of weather), even Goli is sneezing which is terrifying me everytime!...My hands are full

Glad to hear that Beni is maintaining - as others have mentioned about their ratties .... Hunter maintained quite happily on meds (ferosamide and pred i beleive - we never did determine if it was congenital heart failure of if it was a tumor in his chest - i didnt want to put him under to snap an xray) but he stayed bright and happy for months
Again, glad to hear things are going well!

Tonight there was a different rat in the cage!! :D Thin-waisted, a bit bony, but climbing around. I think the addition of a small amount of dex just topped it for him
His breathing is still crappy but nowhere near as bad. He was climbing around the bottom of the cage trying to huff at the Horde who are out in my bedroom LOL

Glad to hear he is doing better.
Lasix, fortekor, atenolol, pred and baytril gave Caleb several months of good quality time.
Lasix, fortekor, atenolol, pred and baytril are giving Ralphie a good quality life at present. No miracles but it will control their symptoms for awhile. Have had to double Ralphie's fortekor since he started on the meds but he is almost completely off the pred. The baytril, of course, is because of the pred.

Fabulous news Shelagh!!!!!!

Such a glorious little man!!! I have no doubt that, despite his inbred fears, he is very much aware that you are the reason he feels better! :love4:

Let's face it sweetie... you're hard not to love; even for a little Wildling who may have learned bad things about humans!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he eventually finds the courage to come out of the cage! Far fetched idea? Maybe... but so was the hope that you would be able to medicate him enough to help his respiratory issues!

:bananas: :bananas: :bananas::bananas: :bananas: :bananas:

Hahaha...dancing bananas make me dizzy before my morning coffees :D

Thanks Jen, I do have hope, because he doesn't gasp like he did when I hold him, he's still stressed but normal Wildling stressed, so I have high hopes they can all come out into the Pen this weekend. :D

Beni was fabulous this morning, climbing around the cage again...its 4' tall so that's quite an achievement for him to be exploring at the bottom. His double decker is at the top :D

He's soo thin, but he's bright and sweet about his meds. Once i pick him up and brace him against my body and get the syringe in his mouth he dangles those hindlegs, grabs on with his front paws and licks the syringe.

Yeah, that's the mindset we gotta keep in mind for Beni & for all our most challenging kids! Thanks for the heads-us jennifervb. And when we forget to believe in miracles we need to venture back in this site. And I might have been wrong back when I suggested that an unhappy-seeming wild-minded kid might be more happy with dangerous freedom than safe loving protective captivity. Just cause we don't show stuff sometimes doesn't mean we don't appreciate it or come to rely on it.
You're Beni's mom, as you are to all your Wildlings. I figured one day they'll know there was nothing better beyond what they had here with you, but maybe they already know it, they just gotta be them.

It's a beautiful mind-picture Beni up against your body - his legs dangling (and belly stretched out and showing  ) while he grasps the syringe and life. I'm so happy he's doing that and is feeling better!!! :happydance:

Here's something even more crazy. I looked at him last night, and he's thin (even his face is bony) but his breathing has improved drastically!!

:joy:

Right now he's on .07 cc's of Fortekor, .2 cc's of baytril mixed with .05 cc's of dexamethasone.
