I was bringing in a bowl of peas for my rats and Smidgen poked her head out from a pile of flannel scraps that I'd put on the lower level of the cage
she's a bit of a flake, so I wasn't alarmed to see her still down there while I was cleaning up some stuff on the top level, but when she didn't come up for the peas, I checked on her,
and she was stuck in a hole in the flannel and couldn't get out, and apparently couldn't back out either, she was stuck!
we had a few scary moments where I was trying to enlarge the hole enough for her to get thru it, and she was really looking frantic, and finally she was able to squeeze herself thru
she was clearly shaken up.
I had always thought that only fabric that was hanging up was a potential problem, I mean if you had a holey hammock you needed to toss it out because a rat could get stuck in the hole and possibly "hang" themselves
I never had one get stuck in fabric that was on the floor of the cage, now I am going thru and removing anything with small holes like that
