So I took my 5 rats to the vet, and Bonnie was put on Baytril, as she was open mouth breathing the night prior to the visit and looked like she was gagging at one point (scared the crap out of me! :(). I don't think its helping too much to be honest. She makes her weird noises less frequently, but she'll act up every 8 hours or so, and I'll have to stick her in a steamy bathroom. I've been trying to listen to where the sound is coming from, and I'm not completely sure, but it doesn't sound like her lungs. It sounds more like her sinuses. The vet did say that her lungs sounded clear too.

I managed to catch a video of her making the noise (not easy, I kept on missing it, lol). And pretty much what you hear is one of the better sounding noises she makes (better, as in less scary!). She's been on Baytril since Monday night, 2 doses a day, and she hasn't acted up like she did the night before we saw the vet, but at the same time its not any less frequent or bad as the day of the visit. And I have a feeling that it might be because I monitor her pretty much all day and stick her in a steamy bathroom the minute she acts up, and not due to the Baytril. I'm getting a humidifier tomorrow and I'll see how that goes.

But either way, I'm worried and would like some input In the video, you can hear the noise at 16s and then again from 21-23s. I don't know how to post videos, or if you can post videos, in a post. Would anyone be willing to check out the video and let me know what they think via email? I'd really appreciate it.

The best way to post a video is to upload it to Photobucket ot Youtube and post the link/video code.

How old is Bonnie? Was she put on only Baytril? For how long? What kind of bedding/laundry soap do you use?

I've uploaded it on photobucket.

Bonnie was estimated to be 7-8 months old. She was only put on Baytril, since this Monday. She started on Monday night and has had 2 doses a day. I use fleece bedding and I use Ecos, a natural/gentle detergent. The issues started when I ran out and used Tide once... I've rewashed everything and they've been using fleece with their regular detergent for 2 weeks now, but the breathing hasn't gotten better. The sneezing has gone down though.

In her bathroom cage for steaming purpose I used HT diamond soft bedding.

Mmm, it's almost like a small cough or like clearing her throat.
Which vet did you see? She doesn't look bad, she didn't sound bad apart from that noise, she looks clear and active.

I went to Clarington Animal Hospital. And yes, she's still active and eating. :) But I'm scared its going to suddenly progress into something severe. The noise hasn't gone away or become any less frequent, aside from the really bad episode on Sunday night. :( And whenever she starts up with that noise, it'll persist and her breathing consistently sounds like that until I stick her in a steamy bathroom. (The video was taken in the bathroom where she was starting to clear up)

Also, today Lux started with that noise too..... :(

I just really want to find a way to clear it up. It's so worrisome.

Baytril alone may not be good enough.

I'm checking in with the vet probably Monday to give him an update so he can see if he needs to prescribe something different. So I guess I'll see what happens when she's put on new meds. I'm just worried that it still wont clear up =/

I cannot find anything on this particular vet, whether they are rat knowledgeable etc :/

The vet seemed pretty knowledgeable... he knew what they had (mycoplasma) and had a plan to treat it. And he aside from what I went in for, he also did a check for mammary tumors (which he says are common), and showed me where and how to feel them for it. Stuff like that. So I'm confident with him. I was originally going to Courtice Pet Clinic, but they were fully booked for the day so they were the ones who recommended Clarington Animal Hospital.
