With Alex just having passed, I'm leery a bit on starting intros between Flux and Goliath (I really tried to keep Oscar as his name, but Goliath won out) without both of them getting checked by the vet first.

Both have very occasional sneezies. Flux gets them when he's out of the cage on the couch and they will both be getting their cages cleaned today.

Someone on another forum asked me why I was waiting to go to the vet since they are both in the same air space so if they had anything they could pass to the other boy, it already would have been passed.

My response was that I wanted to make sure there was a clean bill of health for both the boys before starting intros because Alex just passed with URI issues at first that may or may not have been something congenital.

So I'd like advice. Goliath was all over the side of the cage near the bed when I had Flux on the bed for some out time.
Neither seem to be actually sick besides a few sneezies here and there, (Cage is a lil stinky because it's getting cleaned today. I couldn't bear to do it a few days ago with Alex's passing) but otherwise both seem healthy and happy.

Flux is growing increasingly more active since Alex passing, Goliath well.. he doesn't have a lot to his cage because it's smaller than the main cage that Flux is in, but he wanders around and snuggles into his basket up top and whatnot.

Again, neither seems sick, do you think it would be fine to start intros?

Ideally they will be going to the vet soon regardless, as soon as my credit card comes in. Thankfully the vet I will be changing too can and will do payment plans for everything besides the initial visit fee.

I would start intros whenever you are comfortable with them and do the vet visit when you can afford it. It doesn't matter now anyway, unless you suspect one is very sick in which case, the stress of the intro can acerbate the illness.

I'm cleaning cages in a few minutes and then I think giving both boys a quick wipedown (Goliath's tail is still a little dirty) and a dab of Vanilla then I think I'll try a very loose intro to gauge their reactions. I've never done intros before O_O

Did a small intro on the couch today. A little bit of vanilla (imitation, we don't have the real stuffs :() down their butts, plopped them on a clean towel with a shallow bowl with peas and water in it.

We had sniffing, mostly on Flux's end. Goliath is definitely the more subservient of the two. Flux was very curious and we had grooming, Goliath squeaked once or twice, but other than that there wasn't really much issue.

Flux continually peed and walked over Goliath to pee on him more. Goliath seemed a bit nervous because he would freeze some when Flux did it, but eventually he didn't care and went back to pea-fishing and eating up the nommy peas.

I'm thinking it's been a successful little intro to start off so far. Flux kept nudging in and under Goliath's head and walking over and under him and everything, but there wasn't any puffy or side-walking type things.

What's the vanilla for?

Someone on a thread about intros suggested it so that they smell familiar to each other.

And yes, good start! I'm going to do it again tonight after I do some chores I totally didn't do yesterday >.> Stupid laundry. I have to kick the dogs outside though because the lab looks at them like food and Jezebel likes to lick them a lot, she has her terrier instincts that make her go "Fooooooood" as well so neither can be there to cause excess stress.

Personally, I hate vanilla and masking the rats. Sooner or later they will need to get to know who they are and best to do it right away.
