My boy Romeo has a vet appointment tomorrow.
His lower eyelid is VERY swollen and his eye is glassy, I cant take pictures because he is a very skittish boy.
I think his eye got scratched and is now infected.
Has this happened to anyone elses rattie?
Any ideas how I could ease his pain until tomorrow? His eye looks painful I cringe when I look at it. :sad3:

I also have no idea how I'm going to give him antibiotics he's so skittish. Any suggestions on that would be nice too.

I swear I have so many issues lately just cant get a break. :thud:

I had a rat with a scratch in his eye but it was very mild, antibiotics cleared him up. But more serious eye conditions can have a more serious outcome but for now, lets wait to see what the vet thinks.

If they dont like meds you can burrito wrap him to give them to him. If you chose to be nice then you can hid them in tasty foods. good luck at the vet.

Back from the vet and it doesn't look good.
When the vet pulled back the bottom eyelid there was a mass there it was yellow colored and when the vet messed with it blood started coming.
He said it could be a cyst, tumor, or hopefully just swelling.
I was giving antibiotics and eye drops to try and flush the eye out.

The eye problem just showed up overnight can tumors just pop up like that?
I'm really hoping it's not a tumor and something easily fixed.

Sending healing vibes to your boy. And yes tumors do pop up that fast. But not sure it would bleed like that, hope it's something fixable.

Sadly yes, tumours can pop up overnight. But lets keep our fingers crossed that it's just an infection and will soon be cleared up.

He's so young under a year old I feel so bad for the poor baby. :sad3:
Thanks for the well wishes both of you.

Best case its a scratch or infection that heals w antibiotics. Worst case its an infection that won't heal, or some sort osf mass that results in removal of the eye in the case of a bad infection w damage, or a tumor removal which may or may not include the eye. If it comes to this, a knowledgeable vet can do a good job and your boy can be ok. Lots of healing vibes coming his way, keep us posted!

Aww I'm sorry. He'll be in my thoughts for sure! I hope it's something that can be cleared up easily.

Did your vet attempt to remove the yellow thing? Is your rat a hairless per chance? Do you have your rat on aspen shaving or wood shavings?

Can you attempt to take a pic while skitty boy is in the cage so we have a general idea even if not a closeup look?

He tried but Romeo ended up getting to stressed out so we stopped.
He says if it doesn't improve by monday to bring him in to be sedated so he can take a better look.
He is not hairless and I use care fresh bedding you know the paper grey stuff.

Thank you again for all the well wishes and here's to hoping it's just a infection.

I'll attempt a picture tomorrow when I wrap him up for meds 10pm here so a bit to late to get him out.
Tried putting meds in food but he's a really picky guy and knew what I was tying to do.

Its more of a nakie thing but rats can get stuff stuck under their third eyelid, but with yours and how very fast it came out, I am more inclined to think infectin/abscess than tumour. Good luck tomorrow with the abs.

After just one dose of meds his eye has gone down a whole lot.
He wont sit still for a picture sadly.

But just from the results I've seen so far I think he's going to be fine. :)
Amazed at how fast it went down really.

Ohh good, I guess the blood may have been mixed with pus as well, and the abscess deflated. Hopefully the antibiotics get in there and kill the rest of the bacteria :)

Just thought I'd post a update and thank everyone for their well wishes.

Romeo's eye is looking tons better and I can now see what looks to be a hole in his eye.
I'm thinking maybe he got scratched or something after all.
Things are healing well though and there's been no more blood.
The yellow mass is gone and he's back to his crazy self.
I will say this has brought me and him closer because i've been babying him a bit lately.
