I had to bring my rat Simone (champagne hooded top ear) to an ER vet for her breathing the other night. It was a complete nightmare.
It was 9:30pm and raining. I don't have a car so I had to take a bus and walk. I put Simone in her cardboard SPCA box. By the time we got on the bus she had chewed her way out and I had to wrangle with her in my sweatshirt on the bus.
I got on the bus and it was so dark and rainy and miserable I lost my way and ended up in the middle of nowhere out by UBC. I got off the bus at 10:15 completely lost. Turns out the bus route had changed and I was unaware of it. So I had to walk back to another bus stop. So I did, and we waited in the cold, dark rain for 20 minutes. I saw the bus coming and right before it got to me, it turned. Yep, the bus stop had MOVED. So I had to walk more. Got to the new bus stop and waited for another 20 mins and Simone was so restless.
She was in the carrier but I couldn't put her down on the ground because she kept wanting to get out. Walking was the only thing that stopped her from doing that. I must've walked almost a kilometer by the time I got to Granville street. I called a cab and waited another 10 minutes.
Got to the vet and b/c of COVID we all had to be outside. It was raining and cold. They came and got her and put her on O2. It took another hour for the vet to call me. Yes, all consults were done over the phone while I was freezing and soaking wet outside. She has a respiratory infection so they put her on Baytril and Doxy. I had to wait another half hour for them to prepare the medicine.
The bill was 250.00. I'm low income and that bill really hurt. I'm trying to get help from a local charity to try and recoup some funds. I'm not counting on anything.
Simone is fine. After she took her first dose, the next day she was much better and acting more like a very young rat that she is. The vet was excellent though, if not super expensive.
