I'm considering adopting a rat but she has a problem with vaginal bleeding. She was checked for masses but none were found. They started her on baytril and the bleeding stopped but if she goes off it it starts again. Does anyone know what could be causing this? It seems a little extreme to keep her on baytril for the rest of her life.

The only option would be to attempt spaying her which might stop the problem. But that might extreme, I have a girl not healthy enough to spay and she's been on Septrin for months now and that controls it.

Eve, a recent rescue was bleeding from her vagina.
It stopped but she had to have an emergency spay done or her uterus woud have ruptured.

If she does not have respiratory issues that would make surgery dangerous,
I would suggest a spay by a vet experienced in spaying rats.

How old is she? It's not uncommon for rats to have to go on maintenance meds for the rest of their lives. But, I agree with the above statements, a spay may need to be considered if it's not already been ruled out as an option.
