So I took my Stewart and Sam into the vet today. We suspect Stewart has myco flair ups and he's pretty bad but Sam is starting to squeek...

So today, I've come home $300 poorer and it looks like Christmas is out for everyone but the kids! OMG!

Stewart has a round of baytril for 6 weeks and a round of doxy for 6 weeks.

Sam has a round of baytril for 2 weeks.

I bought revo for everyone, 2 doses....

Although the new vet is WONDERFUL and willing to learn and listen, she charged me two exam fee's of $60ea. Me and her are going to have a talkin when I go back for my doxy.

OMG... URI's I hate you.

I hate URI's

how come Sam only got 2 weeks? You should try to get 6 weeks, as the infection will clear up but come back quickly

Edit: $60 for each?? wow

Sam got two weeks because he only started making noise 2 nights ago. She is hoping 2 weeks will do since it's caught so early, if not I will go back and get more for him :) I'll feed them baytril by the buckets as long as I don't have to spend more money on doxy, omg expensive.

Baytril works well when given for weeks. Two weeks symptoms will be gone ..but they will come back!

how much is your Doxy?

i get capsules, $80 for 25 ..each makes 14 days worth.

Oy, $60 per rat at the same visit? It's great that the vet is willing to listen and learn and work with you, but jeez. That's rough. By "new vet" are you saying they are only new to you, or is this their first position in a clinic? I could understand a first time newbie not realizing that rats seen together sorta unofficially are all seen as one exam/appointment.

New to me vet, but also new to the area. They opened in 2008, and have had nothing but great response from the public. They euth properly, that is the reason I went with them.

And yes, $60 per rat taxes in for an exam. I am hoping with time she will see I plan to stick with her and work something out with me. I cannot afford $60 every time for every rat. Even my old vet (who had the bedside manner of a wet mop) wouldn't charge me double fees. But she didn't know squat about rats and insisted they be dosed and treated like kittens for everything.

My Doxy cost $90 for 6weeks worth. You are paying $9.60 for the same treatment!

Momma, can you give me more info on that so I can call her? I think I am being charged a little too much, yes?

I do know that vets tend to charge what would be the same as a pharmacy handling fee for dispensing meds, PitLuvs - I'm not sure what it is, exactly, but obviously the cost for getting meds from a vet is higher. The advantage for getting them from a vet, of course, is having the proper dosing recommended, knowing the source of the meds (meds ordered online could come from any number of countries, theoretically).

Prices for Doxy vary depending on whether its already made.where its made or whether its capsule or pills. Mine were ordered from Summit in ON.

I have capsules, so I mix it myself, it also tastes icky due to nothing being mixed with it.

Each works the same. Just mixed differently.

Edit: I used to get it from prescription at my local compounding pharmacy ..$40 dollars for a month ..it was mixed and had flavour ..but I use it so often, my vet told me I was better off getting rhe capsules, it would be cheaper

The stuff I have coming isn't mixed, I asked for this because of shelf life. But I do think it's crushed and ready to mix and flavored. I would MUCH rather capsules I can mix myself, for the sake of saving $80.

Would regular pharmacy's carry this? I remember her saying she had 100mg pills of doxy but didn't have any in rat amounts. Maybe she HAS these but didn't think I wanted to mix myself... I have no problem with mixing meds.

Not sure if regular pharmacies would, I know some compounding pharmacies will - the local compounding pharmacy I use for the meds I need for myself that have to be compounded (allergic to corn starch, a common filler) does vet meds as well, and they have a variety of flavors for medications. So I know they would have the pills to compound it up.

Other than Baytril, our meds for the animals are prescribed through the local pharmacy. The vet writes up a Rx and I have it filled when I get home. The doxy is being supplied by the vet, so that is why I was wondering if you could get doxy at a pharmacy, because it would be cheaper for me to get a Rx done and filled out :)

I wouldn't order online, and I am sure 99% of places will not send to Canada anyways as per regulations?

I am totally unsure if we have a "compounding pharmacy" here. I highly doubt it lol
