Hi guys, new member here just here regarding my 17 month old boy, late Sunday night/ early Monday morning I took him to the vet as I noticed he was having trouble breathing out of his nose without making congested noises and he had lost quite a bit of weight in a few days, they prescribed me amoxicillin .4 twice a day, and from what I’ve read this isn’t enough. I’ve had him on it for 4 full days now and only really noticing a difference in the loudness of the congestion noise, I’m taking him to the vet tomorrow would it be okay to ask for some Baytril or something else? Or should I hold off for a few days and see how it goes
Thank you for your help x

I would definitely ask for baytril(enrofloxacin) and doxycycline if possible. Let us know how that goes. Depending on where you live you might have options if the vet refuses to give you better antibiotics

I took little man to the vet today and the gave me Enrofloxacin, his temp is still 34 and he refuses to use the heat pack, has been drinking little bits of water all day and has had some porridge

Good that he is eating a bit ….. it is difficult to breath and eat at the same time so ill rats lose weight
Feed him soft foods that are easy to eat. This will also help him to stay hydrated.
Foods such as his rat blocks soaked in cool water to make mush, organic soy infant formula thickened with baby cereal ............… and supplemented with things like cooked whole grains such as oatmeal, cooked organic quinoa, cooked vegs, mixed greens, pureed cooked vegs or baby food, watermelon, etc

Can you turn up the heat? or put on a tea shirt under a warmer shirt and cuddle him on you under your shirt so that your body heat warms him up? What are you using for a heat pack?

If you can tell us what he weighs, the strength of the Enrofloxacin (mg/ml), the amount and frequency he is getting then Lilspaz68 can check to make sure he is getting the correct dose

Are you also continuing to give the amoxicillin?

Hi guys Remys doing a lot better, now eating and drinking with no problem still has the congested sound though but I am taking him to a vet that specialises in rats so I can get some more advice, they told me not to have him on amoxicillin and Enrofloxacin so he’s just on Enrofloxacin for now but I have seen a massive improvement in the last two days

Update: remy had a reaction to Enrofloxacin, was able to take him to a vet that specialised in rats, one of my younger boys tommy started having the same sort of congested noise so took them both in, age suspected a upper respiratory so they have been on new medication since the 28th. They are both on 0.06 dox in the morning aswell as meloxicam 0.05 and at night Doxy again 0.06 with Zithromax 0.18, I saw an improvement after 4-5 days no noise coming from them and they were back to their normal selves, a few days ago remy started making a congested noise again on and off and tommy today too. They’ve been getting harder to give medicine to and have noticed them holding it in their mouth and dribbling it out so they might not be getting all the medication. I have another young boy nugget who is fine, has a little build up around his nose but has had that since I got them, just wondering if I should worry? They’re all doing fine, it’s been warm here lately so they’ve been less active but all in all doing so much better I’m just concerned

Hi guys me again, I still have remy and tommy on Doxy and meloxicam in the morning and foxy and Zithromax at night, tommy is 100% no noises or anything back to his normal self with his younger brother, remy on the other hand still has this sneezy/congested noise every now and then? He’s perfectly fine back to his healthy weight and playing like normal but sometimes he’ll start making a congested sound, and then he will sneeze and it will go away, anyone else had this? Please someone

I am not sure how long they were on the antbiotic combo that was working
but when antibiotics are working rats need to stay on them at east 4 weeks - although have found that mine need to be on antibiotics for at least 6 weeks in order for them to be better and for symptoms not to quickly return. In my experience azithromycin needs to be given at large doses twice a day.
As Jorats said, it sounds like Remy needs to continue the meds and if he gaets any worse, them the vet may need to add another medication.

I was wondering if you were giving them enrofloxacin orally twice a day, and what reaction Remy had? Medication Guide: Enrofloxacin / Baytril
