Ok so today I just made an appointment next Wednesday at the vet. They dont have a small animal vet normally there but one comes in every wednesday from out of town so I dont know if shes any good:? . But anyways.. Im taking my 2 older boys Willard and Legion (will be 2 this November) to get a check up because I noticed some funny patterns in their breathing and if anything is wrong I wanna hit this hard and fast so nothing horrible happens.

So with legion, he is stil extremely active and acting fine but has been sneezng more lately and his breathing has increased speed and just last night I noticed that when he breaths sometimes it makes him mov forward, like hes pushing it or something (its hard to explain) but it doesnt look scarey laboured either.

Willard has always been very lazy so I REALLY have to study him to see if anything has changed, they both still eat well but he mainly just always sleeps he has been sneezing more and a lot of red stuff has been coming out of his nose an he gets the "Hiccups" atleast 3-4 times a day now (that I've noticed) and his breathing seems a bit odd aswell, it doesnt seem awkwardly fast-but faster and its hard to explain but when he breaths he inhales slow and then when he ex-hales..its like fast, so slow inhale and fast ex-hale kinda :?

So today I said, No, Im not taking any chances, its vet time. What I wanna know is what do you think would be a good combo to but them on if they have anything?? AND if I go to the vet and she says their lungs sound clear what should I do because I KNOW that you dont always hear when they are sick AND I KNOW my rats breathng has become funny, Im worried she wont hear anything so I wont get meds because this happened to me once :(

UPDATE----------------------------------------------

So got back from the vet, all 3 boys are on baytril (brought constantine because I noticed some symptoms. She only let me have enough for 2 weeks for each and I talked to her about more but she said if they seem sick to come back after two weeks so that part didnt go as planned :( but oh well I will keep an eye, if I have to go back I will. Willard was sick when he was a baby and checking over willard she could tell his lungs were damaged which I knew were :( he has lost a tiny bit of weight and is lazy but still has the energy to eat a bit if I offer something real tasty. Im hoping he pulls through! He should though :?

and I dont know if anyone here read my post about constantines sprained foot... well the swelling went away and everything but there was a ball around his ankle that never went away.. and a month later he still drags it a bit. The vet checked it out and she said it either fractured or was broken and feels like a calcium build up. his ankle isnt squishy, its like the bone feels thicker and looks a lot thicker. And theres some mobility loss in the leg so he will somewhat permanently drag it =( but he is still pretty fast for a gimpy guy  Anyways thanks for everyones input! :D

Another Ontarian! :)

The porphyrin on Willard's nose should be a big tip off to the vet, coupled with his age and your claims of sneezing. I don't think you'll have a hard time convincing anyone if he doesn't do it on his own. Same goes for Legion. 99% of the time my rats will sound worse than they are out of anxiety and being handled by a stranger in a very strange smelling place. You might find your kids act the same. I think it's safe to say that the average person thinks the porphyrin is blood and would rather let a rat suffer than take it to an exotic vet.. you shouldn't have a hard time getting your message across.

I'm a big fan of Baytril for mild URI's. I have a dude who's on it for life and it works like a charm. The trick is not letting them talk you into getting any less than 2-3 weeks worth. Any less and it'll just relieve the symptoms instead of get rid of 'em.

Oh, and print this out: http://www.rmca.org/Articles/dchart.htm I bring a copy to every appointment even though my vet kicks butt. He feels more confident when I ask for specific things and has something to refer to.

I agree with what Cigar said... I too would ask for only Baytril at first, then if that doesn't seem to improve things, then you could ask to add Doxy.
