Hello everyone,
I have 3 brother rats that are 2yo.
My rat, Llama has a skin problem that started about 5 months ago.
It started when I moved house.
We were living directly on the ocean and I moved into the suburbs so think the salt in the air has kept whatever this is at bay.
I have seen a vet and spent quite a bit trying to help and with no answers. It's now at twice a day I'm putting Betadine on him to try and help him.
They were all treated for mites/parasite with a 3 month treatment. It was suggested to me that this was rat dermatitis. Out of my 3 boys he is the only one with it. I seperated them at first but have let them back together now due to the length of time, So it's not contagious.
When I first got them I found the bedding available here all hurt there nose so I use large puppy training pads. It went to the point where I gave him full freedom away from his cage to see if it had anything to do with that with no changes. He isn't being barbered either.
I'm at wits end with no answers. I don't think he should be living like this. Does anyone have any suggestions on more to try?
I've been to vet but can't find a specialised one who will send off for testing. Been told too many times I could replace my rat for $10.
Llama is still showing affection and like head rubs. I've tried more then what I have put on here it would just take too long.
Any advise would be appreciated.

Could that be a staph infection? If so, I think there's meds for it. Also, what do you feed him?

Any vet that tells you you can replace your rat, is not a vet I would trust to care for my rats. And people.....they just don't understand our addiction to rats, and can sometimes be cruel. Revolution or stronghold is the only thing you should use for mites. Some use ivermectin, but I think it's a little risky if you don't know what you're doing. And only one treatment is needed for mites. Also, it's almost never beneficial to seperate them unless absolutely necessary. They get sad, scared, and stressed, which can exacerbate the issue or sickness. Talk to Lilspaz, she can give you some good guidance. Hope your rattie feels better.

Ok what treatments have you tried? What was the 3 month mites treatment? Can you get more pics as that one isn't good enough. My guess from what you describe you may be dealing with a bacterial skin infection or pyoderma.
