Brenna is my 20 mos old chronic resp girl, she's on baytril and doxy long term (although the vet didn't give her doxy at first, grrr!) and both vets that she saw for this initially only gave me 2 weeks of baytril for her, at a much lower dose than the rat guide and every one here uses grrr

anyway, that's the history (oh, she also came from a heavy smoker's home, when I got her and her sister, they stunk of cig smoke)

I have saline for nebulizing but nothing else and I have some pediapred too.

ok sorry I'm so scattered
anyway last night she looked awful, breathing really hard and fast and eyes dull, she just wanted to be held so I held her and then when she was finally relaxed I gave her a neb treatment of just the saline and some pediapred

she finally got to where she could breathe a lot easier and we all went to bed

she looks a lot better today but last night was the worst I've seen her, she was sucking in her sides, I honestly thought she was going to die
she'd get panicky and want to run off but then would come and hide in the fleece I'd warmed up in the dryer for her

the vet won't be available til Tuesday, i have an appt already for that day for my cat for her annual exam but i can easily just bring Brenna instead

cuz this vet is extremely conservative wiht meds I need to know what i should be asking for, like, should she be on a bronchodilator? or a new antibiotic, or what?
ANY advice you can give me on what to do for her at home and what to get from the vets greatly appreciated

I am not well emotionally (I have bipolar disorder and PTSD) and am having symptoms of both so concentrating and remembering is very difficult for me, so even if you are repeating info that is somewhere else thats good for me

hope this makes sense
just when i relaxed about Teddy, this happens

also it's ok if the other rats breathe in the saline neb, right? i needed to keep a buddy with her, she was so distressed

thanks

Absolutely fine for a well buddy to be nebulized with saline so don't worry about that. I even asked Dr Munn about the hypertonic saline and got the "its fine"

She's on baytrl/doxy...did it work for awhile?

I would ask for zithromax, and doxycycline, and a steroid unless you have lots of pediapred. It takes days to build up in the system so start now.

do you mean it takes days for the steroid to build up, or the zithromax?

baytril/doxy was working great, and she actually has been looking great, so I don't know why this happened so suddenly

I worry maybe she got too much steam? from when I was cooking, I mean- I spent most of the day before yesterday boiling pots of veggies to make soups and broths, plus it was raining, and it got very very moist in the apt, the windows were dripping with water. I opened the windows for a short while (in a different room from where the rats are so they wouldnt get a chill) and it cleared out
but maybe that made things worse?
humidity is supposed to be good for you and all, but maybe it was too much??

although she looked ok that day, it wasnt til middle of the day yesterday that she looked rough, spiky fur and dull eyes

probably should have given her the pred right then, but I didn't :(

ok so I"ll ask for zithromax , will see if my neighbor can print out the rat guide cuz this vet will probably think rats can't have it. :p
