I'm so sorry. I know how devastating that is. We lost one girl during the night many many years ago to someone of our four dogs at the time. However, upon reflection, many lessons were learned from that mistake.

I'm so sorry. Don't forget that it's not your fault we can't read into the future and see whats going to happen because then we would never learn. You have adopted out many babies to many wonderful homes and you have saved rats that may have otherwise become food. you made thier lives better even if in some instances of others stupidity or a rats sickness or anything else that would take them too soon...you made thier lives better and full of happiness for the short time that we have these wonderful creatures in our lives.

I should add that this couple are very nice, loving pet owners.
They were devastated by what happened.
After speaking with me they spent a month or more following my suggestions to try to discover the second girl if she was still alive.
No sign was ever found of her. :(

Oh Holly, I really feel for you... and them. That's such a tragic thing to go through and witness.

I don't trust my dogs with my rats. We have 6 dogs: 5 boxers and then a shepherd lab mix. My shepherd autumn isn't too interested in the rats but when confronted with them she just licks them. for the most part, the boxers are either afraid of them or they lick them but our youngest puppy who is about a year old, when introduced to one of our girls, tried to bite her head in an instant without any thought. Luckily she didn't but since then she's so fixated on the rats that she'll sit and stare at the cage for 15 -20 min at a time. bad puppy!

now that i've heard this though i'll never leave them in my room alone with the rats. I never thought a dog would actually break into the cage to try and get them. That's so horrible!
