I just rescued 2 boys this week and finally found a vet that will neuter them for a reasonable fee (still pricey to me, but cheaper than all the others).

But now I'm doing that thing again, where I stress over details and give myself panic attacks by about all the things that could go wrong. I did the same thing when my dogs got spayed. I know I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight. Ahhhh! I had to play phone tag with the vet office in order to get them on the schedule for tomorrow, and completely forgot to ask them what I needed to do to prep them for surgery in the morning! :panic:

Do I need to take their food away before bed tonight? Can they still drink water? What sort of bedding can they use after surgery? I'm using a paper based bedding, similar to Carefresh Natural, mixed with a soft recycled newspaper crumble because it has baking soda for odor control. Will that irritate the incisions? These two boys are very close, and I don't know if I should separate them for a few days after surgery or not.

:gaah: I'm am so stressed right now that I can't even think straight! Help! I need someone to tell me that things will go fine tomorrow and that I'm over reacting!

I hope all goes well, try not to worry! Wouldn't want them to pick up on your stress. Not needful to take up food and water - they can't vomit, so no worried about that happening during surgery, and they'll need their strength. Definitely let them keep their food. Any kind of clean dust free bedding would be good, fleece changed frequently would probably be best. Let us know how it all goes!

I'm going to re-clean their cage while they're in surgery (even though it's only been 3 days since the last cleaning), so they can come home to fresh bedding. I tried the fleece thing with my 4 girls and it was a complete DISASTER. Within 48 hours, it was all shredded. And they even stopped using their litter box. So I switched back to bedding. I don't have any extra fleece for the boys to use in their "quarantine cage".

I will definitely give updates after I get them home and settled back in tomorrow. Fingers crossed that everything goes okay! Thanks for the support!

All the best for tomorrow.
The risk is small if you have a good vet experienced in sucessfully doing rat neuters
As previously said, make sure they have acess to food and water.
Do not seperate them. They will feel much better being together.

Personally, I would not put them on bedding with baking soda.
Cheap dollar store fleece blankets would be good, cotton baby blankets are also good as bedding in shelters

Thank you all for the well wishes! Everything went GREAT today! Jenkins and Jeeves are both eating, drinking, and pooping normally. Even though they were still a bit groggy when I got them home, they appreciated the 'Welcome Home' strawberry and tomato slice.

Hopefully their incisions heal quickly so that they can move into their big cage in a few days. :joy:
