it has been a question for over a week now, it started with the swelling of one rats neck, then two, but both had scars near them, took them to the vet last Thursday, she gave me meds for the whole group, the 5 in that colony. we had no other symptoms other than a minor hairless cyst, ear infections and lumps. outside of mild sneezing, which is a symptom. The cloudy eyes, conjunctivitis I think it is called, started two days ago on Templeton, his eyelids were reddish looking like he was rubbing them or had something in his eyes, which is also the time i found a lump on another rat neck same spot, today as you can see Templeton eye, and I checked his chin and the lumps have started, it was then I started asking Shelagh again. I told her he was grumpy and refusing food, i put ensure by him, he ran away from the bowl, he is 1.5lbs normally he dont resist food :laugh4: .I asked before but with only two having the symptoms, we kinda went on in another direction, today we were like wait a minute, who else has lumps? I told her that I think it is sdav, and boy she jumped into her knowledge base and they got me through my break down, i was in tears on the phone with the vet, and in chat. Mmak, and kscanuk were in there keeping me calm as well lol..
My vet, that i always go to for meds and surgeries, she isn't the new vet for neuters but she is my vet i will keep for everything else. I told her what Shelagh told me that I needed to fight off the signs we are now seeing, doxy, baytril, medicated eye drops, and metacam for swelling... she didnt even question, i explained what the symptoms we are seeing now and she agreed it sounds just like it . 2 hour drive total to get these meds, worse drive of my life today.
as you can see she gave me a lot of meds, baytril, metacam, eye drops and a large bottle of doxy mixed with val syrup......I am still trying to figure out exactly where it came from, my daughter worked at a vet one day, we are in and out of places, they have pet rats at a school so i may not know for sure. I have purchased cages lately so there is no telling really.
all i can say is if it was not for this guy mr. handsome twiggy I never would of thought check my rats necks for tumors/growths. Edgar is black, so it is hard to see it anything on him, now that i know it is there i can see it protruding from his neck. I just so happened to read on SDA on the ratguide a few weeks back, and read more over the last few days when I really started questioning. i had 5 of my boys neutered thursday, i picked up ludo last night you could tell he lost weight. so he also has some lumps forming along with some of my girls.
