My young rat, Princess, had a little accident and her tail is scraped. I've been cleaning with saline solution 3+ times a day and am considering getting an antibiotic, which I can if I need it. I've heard the risk isn't that bad and maybe going full-force with medication isn't quite necessary; opinions? She's seems strong and rough houses with her cage-mates still, she's been protecting her tail on her own volition, we've been spending a lot of personal time together so I can clean the wound and it seems to make her happy; I'm making a lot progress with her given that she's one of my two most skittish rats, on that front.

The other thing I'm considering is getting some antibiotic ointment for her, even if I do not get the meds. I know that stuff can be risky for subsurface abscesses but do they ever get abscesses on/in their tails?

If its a surface injury you can use ointment. Its only when you have a cavity that can trap bacteria and heal over that you get abscesses. Use the ointment and just keep an eye on it. :)
