So I had my boys out last night and Darwin, the more adventurous of the two, fell out onto the floor from my shirt while I was sitting on the sofa, it was maybe a 1.5 foot drop onto the carpet. A little later, I notice he's squealing almost every time he's touched, but I didn't see anything obviously wrong with him. I put them back in their cages and give them some peach and I see that he's not putting weight on the front left paw. He's sort of keeping it balled up. I didn't notice this before his fall. I took him out again and examined it, no blood, no bruising that I see, he's just balling the little fist. I gave him some Metacam since it was late on a Friday night.

Today, he is not squealing, but he is still not putting weight on the leg and now it looks swollen up around the wrist. No discoloration that I see. I emailed the vets I work with, but have not yet received a reply. I'm just wondering if there is anything else I should do. Maybe one of vets can meet with me today or tomorrow, or I might just have to take him in first thing Monday. :(

You are doing all you can at this point...sounds like a bad sprain if there's no major discoloration...keep the swelling down and it should heal on its own. If he insists on climbing around and re-injuring himself you might want to consider removing ramps to higher levels or putting him in a one-level cage to restrict his movement. But most rats will favor the limb and will heal without any other measures. How swollen is it? Really swollen or just mildly swollen?
