Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc) is an NSAID - Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug. It is a painkiller, it reduces fever, and it reduces inflammation. It works well on traumatic things like sprains because it's reducing pain and inflammation. This is opposed to a drug like acetaminophen (Tylenol) which will not have any effect on inflammation, only the pain. Ibuprofen should only be taken for a few days at a time. It is not meant for long-term use, and is hard on the stomach.
