Last night I noticed that one of Onyx's hind feet is swollen and he isn't using it. My vet is out for the rest of the week, but I'm assuming there isn't really much to be done besides giving him some Ibuprofen anyways?

His last weight was 750 grams...what dosage should I give him? 60mg/lb? I think Children's Motrin comes at 100mg/5mL...sooo...He needs 96mg. So 4.8 mL?

I'll let Lilspaz reply with the dosage amount. 4.8ml seems like a big dose.

Whenever mine sprain their feet and such, I don't give them anything, I try to keep them quiet and resting and usually by the 3rd to 5th day they are doing much better.

I read on the rat report 60mg/lb (it's also on the Rat Medication Guide as the dose for anti-inflammatory)...the RMG also has 30mg/kg on it.

Which one should I go by?

Ohhh I didn't see that second line on RG until now.

I'd wait for others to weigh in on a good dose for your little guy! Healing vibes to him :cuddle:

The lowest recommended dosage of liquid oral Baytril is 0.2ml per lb (or 0.5ml per kg) twice daily for 14 to 30 days but this dose can be increased by up to 4 times, depending on the ailment. Baytril works best when dosed regularly and splitting the daily dose into 2, one given in the morning the other at night, works well. This means your 'typical' 300g doe would get 0.15ml x 2 and your 'typical' 600g buck would get 0.3ml x 2. (Please bear in mind that 'typical' is a basic average - it is highly recommended you weigh your rats!).

Hehe, it's okay. Baytril is an antibiotic, which in this case, for a swollen foot, isn't needed. The Children's Motrin is for swelling and pain.

I didn't read the OP saying it was a sprain, so I assumed it could be something else such as cellulitis that would have caused swelling as well, sorry.

Ohhhh I misread things, I thought the OP said their vet told them to give ibuprofen.

Anyways, for now Children's Motrin can be given, and if the swelling goes down then it's all good!

Alright...so it's infant formula: 40mg/mL

At 30mg/kg that's .6mL and at 60mg/lb that's .4mL?

Also, that's twice a day correct?

Should I give it to him for only a couple days? We wont be able to get him to the vet until at least Monday...so if the swelling doesn't go down in a couple days from the Ibuprofen should we stop giving it to him you think?

The swelling was a little worse yesterday so I gave him .5mL last night (which seems to have made the swelling go down a bit). I gave him another .5mL this morning.

So tonight we'll see where we're at. If it's gone down again should I continue to dose him for another day or so?
