Carefresh was working great in the litter pans for my two older girls, but since the three younger ones came in, the cage stinks. Who knew going from 2 rats to 5 would stink 10 times as much...? It's even worse because I have a small studio apartment, so my bedroom, living room and kitchen all stink!

So, is Yesterday's News everybody's favorite for odor control? I'm also looking at Marshall Premium Ferret Litter on DrsFosterandSmith.com because they don't have YN. IT looks almost exactly the same. It's more expensive but I think the only place around here that sells YN is Petco. I also saw Jorat's tip with the tiny bit of baking soda on the fleece. The underside I'm guessing? I can tell that it's mostly the stink of the Carefresh, cuz that stuff really has a weird smell when it's wet.

I had an idea this might happen, since I decided to buy the 60L size bag of Carefresh that's not even opened yet! lol

I really like YN. Are the new rats babies? If so... they are stink and poop machines. You'll have to tuff it out until they are about 3 to 4 months old.
Is it very warm in your home? That also contributes to the smell.

They're 3 months old and definitely poop machines! I didn't remember babies pooping that much lol My house is like a green house & gets hotter than the outside temp :( But I've had the AC on for them pretty much constantly, so it's about 72. It does get to 78-80 on the 100 degree days, even with the AC on high! (Oh right, 22.2, 25.5-26.6, 37.7C)
Well it's good to know it will calm down a little soon, thanks!

You are going to have to tough it out until the babies stabilize. Also, what are they eating, this could factor in as a stink maker.
