So, I finally have a date set for Splinter to get neutered - Nov 19. :happydance:

I can't wait as he is starting to get a little antsy being alone (though he comes with me everywhere, he has now become very clingy and freaks out when I'm in the room and not playing with him).

So now I need the advice and info -

How long will the surgery take?
Will he come home the same day?
What can I do afterwards?
What sort of cage should I have him in after?
How long does he take to heal?
When can I put him in with the girls afterwards?

And any other advice or info :wink2:

Thanks!!

Great news...... :joy:
He will be at the vet for the day...usually from 8:30 until 5..
Not much to do after wards......offer him his favorite foods, lab blocks and water.....
Usually they receive a shot of long acting pain meds (mine did) if not watch for signs of pain but none of mine needed anything extra.....
He will probably be back to his old self the next day.
It is 3 weeks after neutering before he can go back with his family.....

Thanks so much!

I was worried that it would take weeks for him to heal and such!

Why 3 weeks? Is that for introductions? or how long it takes to fully heal to the point of being with other rats?

It really depends on your vet. Some will keep the rat the full day, but others can go in a few hours. we also pick up our rats around noon.
You will want to keep him in a clean cage with no litter, just fleece or newspaper.
He will heal real fast, within a couple of days.
But shouldn't meet the girls for another 2 to 3 weeks, that's when you are sure there are no sperm remaining in any parts.

Yay for sweet Splinter!!! :joy:

Sorry, I didn't see your post before mine, nuetering is 40 bucks, spaying is probably up in the hundreds.

I know you live near/around me. Where the heck did you find a vet that will neuter for $40?!?!?

I have been quoted $350 for a neuter, and I can't even imagine a spay!!!! I am totally willing to drive for this price!!!!

Hey I was about to start a thread just like this for Tip! LOL He goes in Tuesday. Nervous and excited at the same time!

No one said how long you have to wait before they can rejoin the others... If they are male, and not females.

If it's to add the neutered male to his male buddies, it depends, if the colony is small, you can probably add the rat right away but if it's large, I'd wait a day.

What would you classify as small? I think with *counts* 6 other cagemates that counts as large. *will wait a day*

My vet quoted me a new quote when I called in to actually schedule the appointment... 100 dollars for all of it! Office visit, meds, anesthesia, and the actual procedure. I was like "Sweet!"

Well, he's usually the nutjob who freaks at other rats. I know the other boys don't give a crap, besides Andi, but he never argues with Tip anyway. But we'll wait for a smidge, just to be safe. Plus with them having to climb to get to the levels, I think it might be easier for him to wait a day...

So Splinter is now home from the vet (and only cost $38!) - he slept for a while but now he's up to his old tricks (namely annoying daddy while he's trying to work :p)...I was so worried all day and was so glad to see him again tonight!!

His operation site is looking a little gross (but I assume that's to be expected...?) but he doesn't seem to be in any pain...

Just one thing now - is he going to lose any of his "spunk"? He's always been very hyper...and I know that with other animals, they calm down after getting neutered...Is that the same with rats? Hopefully not too much anyways - we like the Splinter hyperness

Just a few more weeks then he'll be in with the rest of the ratties and no longer alone!!!!!! :happydance:
