Ok I have to run out today so I will definitely pick up some infant painkillers so start him on. Poor little bugger...he just doesn't get an easy run at all.

Here, I put it on my PB.

Oh crap, its growing fast. He needs baytril NOW and metacam or Ibuprofen (metacam ideally). That's not surface pyo.

Here's Selene's entire story on Goosemoose...with all the ups and downs, etc

http://www.goosemoose.com/component/opt ... ,4007562.0
Yes, this looks much deeper than Selene's did. He needs to be seen Monday for sure!
And skin injuries can be VERY painful. I'm glad you're getting him some pain meds today.
Good luck tomorrow!

So I got some infant ibuprofen to help him out until the vet can see him

200mg/5ml solution

Rat guide says:
10 mg/kg to 30 mg/kg , PO , q4hrs
or
15 mg/lb to 60 mg/lb , PO , q4hrs (low dose for analgesia, high dose for anti-inflammatory effect)

so that means that there is 40mg/1ml of medication or 10mg/0.25ml If he weighed 1kg he would get 0.25ml . Quinn weighs approximately 650g (.65kg) so he would need 65% of 0.25ml

ugh, brain hurting...I'll wait for the med experts to help me out on this...been too long since I had to do this type of math plus I don't know if he should be getting near the top of bottom of the range

Ok, let's see if I have this now...he needs (based on his weight) 6.5mg to 19.5mg of medication (at 10mg/kg to 30mg/kg) and 2mg of meds is in each .05ml of solution.

So he can have anywhere from about .15ml - almost .5ml and be within the range....am I right? Now I just need some advice of what end of the range he should be.

ETA: Victoria, wouldn't that be the low end?

Well, I just put some mixed with cool whip in his cage and he's munching away on it...will check back in a little bit to see if it's all gone. I gave a dose of about .4ml as I think he's a little lighter than I thought and it's up the higher end.

It's given SID (once per day) correct? I'll be calling to see if there's the chance to get in with him tomorrow, but if not I will get the vet who is neutering him to give him a look over and prescribe some antibiotics (baytril) and metacam.

I've decided to go ahead with the neuter as planned because if this is a pyoderma it could take months to heal and honestly he doesn't have much of a life right now with his aggression...I don't know how cleaning and medicating would go either. So I'll keep you all updated on how he's feeling tomorrow.

ETA_ no worries Victoria...I was having issues and writing it all out long hand lol

Really? Ah...silly me q24 means every 6 hrs doesn't it....duh.

I doubt he'll take it through the bars, he doesn't really like treats or taking anything I offer him by hand. I'll try next time though. Do you think every six hrs is too spaced out? He doesn't seem different than normal, but his normal is attack, annoyed or sleeping...

I would wait until he's at least on the mend. You don't want to cause more trauma that he has to heal from before the sore starts healing at least. Shelagh also has a good point, part of his aggression may be attributed to pain, so he may improve a bit even without the neuter.
