Crank has always been about the same when it comes to personality. He's shy, scared to death of being picked up (especially out of his cage, not as much of a problem once he's out), he's a pig and will eat untill food coma at times and he's lazy, never liked to run as much as Pickle.

But Pickle sometimes seems to be going back and forth. I'm not 100% sure how to explain it but there's gonna be days when he wants all your attention. He's sniff you, climb on you, try to take your food away, run to your feet from across the room! Then there's days when he'll be really nervous and even tho he comes up on the computer chair with me he'll start acting really really nervous. I'll just touch him lightly for a bit then he quickly jumps down the chair in an "DON'T HURT ME!" way. Sometimes he'll run from us or he'll seem scared to come out of his cage... actually now that i think of it Crank does this too sometimes but it's not as bad. A few times he didn't wanna come out himself, something scared him bad, i don't know what. At times when he's under the couch and we call him over he'll slowly approach as if we're trying to trick him or something.

Is this normal rat behaviour? I'm wondering because i always read how everyone's rat here seems to be a sweety who loves to give kisses and all!
Oh and they come from a pet store. they're almost 2 years old and they've always been like that. They're also more calm when i take them out alone and more nervous when both me and my boyfriend are home. I'm the one who goes them used to human hands and human contact but my boyfriend always cleans the cage (while i'm sleeping, compared to other people if i expose myself to allergies and asthma i get worse and worse and worse.) and from what he's told me they always seem really interested in what he's doing.

Is the behaviour new or has it become worse in the last little while? How old are they? It sounds like it could be hormone levels that are stressing him out and putting him on edge, but he has an implant doesn't he? How long has it been since the implant?

I have a boy that acts sort of similar, but he don´t usually come over to you..
He was completely terrified when I got him tho, so I guess it´s just some "residue" from that..
A neutered helped him a lot, but he´s still fearful.. At the same time, he can love being cuddled..
I hope you find out what´s causing it tho!
With mine I´ve come to terms with that´s just the way he is and try to respect that..

I get a similar reaction out of my boys if I approach the cage with some strange scent. When they first moved in, the smell of my cats on my made them nervous and jumpy. They are used to it now, but once a week I visit my stepmom and her dog, and they're still not used to me smelling of dog. They get right jumpy until I wash and change. Same as if I'm out working in the yard and come in smelling strongly of some plant.

The behaviors have been the same since i had them... of course i got them used to us and they love to come sniff at your hands and all but for the nearly 2 years i've had them they were always like this. Even before the implant so i don't think it's related but he seems more energetic and his er... package looks much smaller!

Right now they're doing awesome and i nearly accidently kicked Pickle because he decided to leap in front of me for some loving.

Aye, my personal thought is maybe things that happened to them before i actually baught them.
OR
Because they pick fights and at times they make a rat ball or become fussy, they sort it out quickly tho. I thought MAYBE sometimes one of them is nervous about being jumped at. It's just the way they've always been with each other but when comes time to sleep they'll snuggle up.

If you notice that Pickle starts to improve over time it is likely die to the implant (so he is now neutered) and it calming him down... Crank may do so as well without another intact boy around.
