It's funny how they bring out the super cute behaviour when you'd think they would be feeling so well! I hope all goes well.

Edit: would = wouldn't ;]

Couple of questions:

Lets say it is a URI and she needs meds. Zithro or Baytril/Doxy. Also does anyone know if there are 'other generic' brands of these that I could get from a pharmacy? Instead of the vets?

I would assume they are liquid, do I put them with something?

Thanks

is this her first medication ever? If so and she's not very ill you might want to try just baytril for up to 4 days, if she improves then keep her on it. If there's not enough improvement then add doxy or zithromax.

As far as I know it probably is her first meds. I would assume the family before Mumsy and I didn't take her to the vets for anything.

Oh, LA, I'm sorry Pearl's having a rough time, I hope that you can get good help for her tomorrow and she is feeling better very soon.
I'm about the go to bed and say my prayers, and they will include best hopes for you both tomorrow.

Ok so I am back. I took Olivia with me as well. Now I am having a problem. Hazel is being a &$^# right now. She keeps going up to both of them and biting and pulling on them. Not breaking skin but still. Is it because they smell different. I have to go to Barrie today. Am I ok to leave them. I'm kinda worried.

So for the vet visit. Everything is clear but Dr Driver did hear a little harshness on the one side of Pearls lung and not the other. She did give me baytril. Zithro she said she would have to order in it's not something she would carry. So she gave me enough for .05 twice a day for 7-10 days. She said she would follow up in 5 days to see how it's going. I know there were a lot of different opinions about what meds. I am just hoping it helps.

She spent a lot of time making friends with them. She is really good with vets and Pearl still liked her after getting her temperature taken.

EDIT: Now Hazel is grooming Pearl. So I guess everything is ok.
Also it only cost me $66 and change for the visit.

Ya, no worries with Hazel, it's quite normal.

What concentration is the Baytril... 0.05 seems a little low. Make sure you do the full 10 days. Hopefully that will be enough.

Hmm not sure what to do now. I probably have enough for 10 days or just over.

I also bought soy milk (because ensure or boost come in packages of 6). So how should I go about this. Should I get the meds into the syringe first and then suck up he soy milk?

Ok so I tried soy milk and it didn't work at all. I couldn't force it on her either. So I soaked it up with a small piece of bread. Would that make it useless? I will try jam tomorrow I think.

Actually that's what I did, but I used a small cap. But it turned into a disaster, she wouldn't take it. I am going to learn this if it's the last thing I do.

If your girl is 300 grams and the baytril is 50 mg/ml the dose would be .06 cc's, so the dosage might be correct.

I showed bruxxy how to syringe meds into their mouth, and she was shocked at how easy it looked. She says that she has no trouble now. :)

I can only describe it for you unfortunately.

1) Hold rat in lap facing away from you.
2) Put left hand under chest of rat (thumb and forefinger before the front paws, the rest of the fingers below) while leaning over so that your stomach/chest almost touches the back of the rat. Then lift the rat and yourself up a bit so the rat is firmly held against her stomach/chest but their feet are still on your lap.
3) Using your forefinger and thumb hold the rats head gently so they cannot move. Then pop the syringe into their mouth on an angle and squeeze in the meds. I usually have a nice treat for right afterwards to encourage swallowing and to say "Good kiddo!"

Next time I medicate with someone here, I will take step by step pics :)

**Poor Bradley was the rat I pulled out so I could analyse my steps...hehehe

If the rat is really fighting me, I like to burrito him/her in a towel, insert syringe on an angle, side lip and squirt:

Thanks so much for that Shelagh and Jo for the picture. Pearl was weighed and she is 280g. Second smallest. So I will continue with the dose. I'm going to go try it now.
