We are experiencing the same sort of thing in France, we don't know yet if it's either Sendaï, SDA, Tizzer or something else. Analysis are beeing done.

This is very strange that such virus is at the same time overseas and over here.

I gotta say that this is one thing that I do fear we could get at some point. We are pretty careful down here. I have two quarantine homes. One that lives above us and one at a different location. When we visit upstairs I have clothes I change into up there so I can handle the new rescues. I'm pretty meticulous with it but it's always in the back of my mind if I'm doing enough.

Update on the ratkids...

The sneezing is mostly over right now except for a few of them. They are all still being medicated.

Unfortunately Malcolm's URI is the same, and he's getting quieter for him. He's also huge which makes moving his weak body around (HED) so much harder.
Rizzo and Frenchie are still sneezing and Rizzo is a bit congested.
Isa and Dusa are doing well and recovering nicely
Yara is in fantastic shape, best ever for her!
Clemmie's getting worse but this was always expected...still bright, not as active, but she's also very old as well. (almost 29 mo) which is really good for a rat I was sure I would lose a lot sooner.
The 2 older new boys are doing well...
Clare and Bree are finaly clearing up, and the only time I hear noises is when they are fighting me on taking their abs LOL
Amity is clearing up, Alana has very rough sounding lungs but she's still running,,,always a good sign
Wally - still nothing
Riley - lungs clear, still medicating
Bunny and Soka, lungs clear, still medicating
black heart girl - improving nicely
Chilly and Bella - almost back to normal
Bean - still rough lungs, just a funny rough sound I have heard off and on since he arrived
Freddy - fantastic, getting that eye out was the best thing for him!
Dusty - still lumpy

Onto my worriesome pair...

Melvin - seems to be feeling a bit better, even if his skin is rough (the skin all flaked off a few days ago similar to Waldos before I lost him), he also is a darker colour as well which is weird. His breathing is not as insane though.
Marty - REALLY doing well for her! Her breathing is really improved, she's keeping her body tmep up, and best of all she's gaining weight!!! Yesterday she was 2023 grams (up 20 grams from when she was really sick) and this morning it was 229 grams



And this is how she curls up and sleeps, on my belly, side, in my hand or under the blankets...

BUT the oddest ones made it through the first outbreak. I have 7 in my 30 Months and Over Club

There are several highly contagious air born rat diseases (SDA, Sendai, etc) that are often fatal to rats. (People who visit pet stores, breeders, etc can even bring these diseases home to their rats.) This is why it is so important to make sure new rats go through a full 4 - 6 week quarantine in a different air space before exposing existing rats (incl waiting 3 hours before going home, cleaning out nose, shedding clothing, & showering after visiting rats in quarantine). Unless rat owners are sure that new rats have already gone through a full quarantine, then they are taking a risk when bringing in new rats. http://ratguide.com/health/basics/quarantine.php

In addition to the highly contagious air born rat diseases, rats can also catch Streptococcus pneumonia from people. Last year I lost several rats and had to put all rats on antibiotics when Streptococcus pneumonia went through my colony. I even put the rats who were not showing symptoms on antibiotics to try to prevent symptoms developing. I have no idea how my rats were exposed to this disease.
