I emailed the pictures to my vet, she said it looks like a hematoma. She wanted me to watch it and keep her posted. Since Algernon was going down hill I went a head an took him in there so she could see him. He is acting fine, eating walking around and so on. She was able to get a penis plug out of him and he didnt feel any pain. She thinks he may have a clotting problem and she dont want to put him under to "check" it out of fear it may cause more bleeding. I will have to watch him and take him back next week. She said she has seen it in dogs and even the ones that it should of been deadly in it wasnt so she was reassuring me that it will be ok. He is able to go pee and poo with out any issues but still I cant help but worry about the little guy!

Busy day.

Second!

And don't worry Hope, your vet knows well and I'm sure he'll be fine. Just a little behind the rest of the pack. :3

Does anyone know of other thread or others that deal with this? I am wondering about it and not sure how to care for him if it is infact a clotting problem.

I would be very very careful about him what meds he's given.

One of the rats I took care of had a hematoma, and she was given TMZ antibiotic, and she had also had some fish oil and some glucosamine . Ten days after her injury she died suddenly, she bled to death at the spot where she had been injured.

I looked up the meds and supplements she was on and two of them had warnings about giving them to a rat with a bleeding problem. Not to scare you, but I think you are very very smart to be concerned about how to care for him.
(don't know for sure but I've heard that fish oil can also thin your blood, but doesn't affect the clotting factor, it's complicated, so best to consult the vet about it, and always make sure any vet who sees him knows his history)

I have the brother of the girl who died and I worry about him too, and will not give him any meds without mentioning to the vet about what happened with his sister. A different vet, that is, I don't trust the one who treated this poor girl.

I remember that. I will be taking him back next week most likely tuesday since it is a holiday weekend. She is more than willing to check him. She just has concern about opening him back up. Which i understand why and I am totally happy for that because she is putting his health and life first.

I put him on a pea pack last night for a few minutes. The vet who put Algernon to sleep told me ice constricts blood vessels so it is worth a shot.

He fights a bit but I guess i would to if someone was freezing my privates. I am only doing it briefly the poor guy shivers so i dont want to make it worse on him.

When I first picked him up there was no blood so i went and got the peas ready and he was dribbling. I pick him up like i would any other rat, I think I need to scoop him up and be a little more holding when I do. He is skittish so he isnt the easiest guy to pick up. I somehow think we will not bond over me freezing his testicle area LOL

I have to leave him alone now, scoop him when I pick him up and try not to let his body stretch. I am trying so hard to keep him out of surgery. if he does infact have a clotting problem It could be bad.

aww the poor boy! He looks so sad (or maybe I think that because I feel sad for him)
ice on your nether regions, not fun!
I hope it's worth it.

give him skritches from me and an extra treat ok

Anything that might even help a bit is worth a shot(and the little rascal will just have to deal with it!).

Side note:
I googled some things and I found out that foods high in Vitamin K help blood clotting, and things high in Vitamin A THIN blood(so you want to avoid things like garlic, or things high in omega-3s). Generally, it seems that deep green veggies are high in Vitamin K.

Maybe research them a bit more to make sure they don't work reversely, and give it a try?

Luckily my rats get a lot of green leafy veggies so they get that dailt. I am trying to load him up with extras like baby cereal and ectra greens. I just have to keep him still as much as possible so he quits opening it. I think I might keep him cage bound for a few days so he can heal.

The bleeding is slowing going away. I only touched him twice yesterday one in the morning and last night. The coloring looks a lot better but he only seems to bleed when I pick him up. He is skittish and freak outs. I just really want him to heal and be done with this so i can figure out what to do with him for life. I have no idea how to adapt to him.

The bleeding externally seems to have stopped. The color is back to normal. I put him back with his group two days ago even though it caused panic attacks because i know boys bite each other :) They seem to be getting along rather well I was worried with them being out of the group for a few days. I will take him back to the vet this week so she can check it. The incision is a bit red but other than that he is acting perfectly fine. Running a muck with his boys.

There is no smell and it doesnt look infected per-say. I am probably gonna start him on baytril. It is an opening but it is always dry I dont see any type of draining happening.

It is about a quarter of the size it was so it went down big time.
