so I was contacted by my vet. there's a pet shop that they sometimes deal with (they sometimes treat their rats) and they have rats with ring worm. the store cannot treat the rats and is trying to find homes, otherwise they will be euthanized.

I'm not 100% sure I have space for more rats right now (I'm still pretty high in numbers for my comfort. down from the 9 I was at when my 2 adopted girls came home pregnant) and I don't have a for sure space to quarantine. but I would hate to see any or all of these little guys put down due to an illness (and my vet doesn't want to see that happen either).

but to the ring worm question! has anyone dealt with treating ring worm? I'm under the impression that it's highly contagious, maybe complicated, but not horribly expensive to treat. how do you know when it's gone/no longer contagious, etc?

(I'm also going to do my best to stir up homes. I don't have in depth info beyond that they have 15 rats and they have ring worm. I still need to contact the store for more info).

oh yeah, I've got an email into Little Mischeif and as soon as I get more info I am going to post on Ratspacnw as well.

I'm mostly curious about the ring worm for myself as well. for what I'd be dealing with if I took on any of the rats. I need to leave a message with my vet and get details on ring worm from them too. I was just wondering if anyone had their own experiences with it. to hear what people dealt with, etc.

it is highly contagious, and can transfer from species to species. its usually very easy to treat, in humans they just use an anti fungal creme, similar to what you'd use for athletes foot.
We use a spray at work, which usually gets rid of it.
Its spread by contact, you'd probably want to change clothes and shower between touching any of the other ratties.

thank you!

just talked to my vet too. they treat with an oral med and topical meds for 3 weeks to 30 days. so very easily treatable.

they may even quarantine the rats for me, if I am able to convince my house mates that 2 more would not be a big deal hehe.
