Hi,

I have learnt so much reading everything on the Rat Shack (I am officially addicted! :giggle: ).

Sadly, I am quite sure that my three girls must have the beginnings of a resp infection. Meesha makes that honking/chirping sound but mainly when excited – much like Hannah in Ratty Momma’s video last week. Sheba does something similar occasionally when sniffing and Rosie has started to do it more and more.
My vet has not had much experience with rats and the rat community here is… well….non-existent…I am probably the sole member of the rat community which doesn’t really make it a community at all, it’s more of a solitudiny.
What should I be asking for? I’ve had Sheba on Baytril before which worked really well. This was combined with Doxwet. I don’t know if that is Doxy? My vet is interested in my rats and is open to information but I did have to plead a bit for Baytril at the beginning and then I asked for Amoxylin (Clavulox) and that was hard to get out of him but he did give it in the end, it also worked really well. So I would like to be prepared when I go in to see him.

Are Baytril and Doxy the drugs that will help the most? Twice a day for Baytril, once for Doxy and for a total of six weeks? It’s scary because there’s no one here with solid experience. I think you guys should all move here!

I’ve just read lilspaz68’s reply to Cinderwolf (looks like we’re having the same problem) and no, I can’t hear any crackling or wheezing., My vet did say that that their lungs were clear a couple of months ago, but I’ve also read that an URI (or was it lower) can have no sound at all.

Sheesh!

I know you don't need pictures but I couldn't help myself

Get your vet to listen to the lungs, if they are loud and raspy then they will need meds. Baytril is the best. Tell him how well it worked last time. Combined with Doxy will add that extra punch. But... be sure it's not doxy added in water. Get the doxy that you administer orally.
It's very important to start a good strong relationship with your vet and it sounds like he's willing to learn, that is always a plus.
They are cuties your little ones.
