My Stefan got an abcess around september..
It has been treated with antibiotics several times(baytril and another one- none worked much)
He had surgery to remove it about 3-4 weeks ago..
Now he have gotten a new one a couple of cm from the original one..
Or, it looks like an abcess, but I´ve had no luck opening it.
It does usually not seem to bother him, but he has almost stopped eating when it got bad(that´s how I noticed it in the first place).
When he´s had the abcess, I flushed it several times a day with saline solution and some medical soap thing(it is used to remove innflammation).
It still has come back every time.
Is there anything else I can try or do to get rid of it for good?
The vet said the original abcess was caused by what i think was an bi-prostate gland or something like that.. I do not remember exactly what he said..
I have a vet appt. on Wedensday.
The first thing I got(another vet) was Bactrim, but I couldn´t get it into him AT ALL..

I don´t know what to do with this :gaah: :sad3:

you may want to consider getting the puss from the abscess cultured... some infections will be resistant to certain antibiotics.

I´ll try to remember asking about that.
Is it generally expencive?
Anything else?

This abscess is near his urethra?

The abscess was lanced and cleaned out or the actual abscess capsule was removed?

How long ago?
I guess. It´s on his stomach. The old one was 1-2 cm over his "manly bits", and the new one is right next to them..

The abcess has been lanced, fluched several times daily and been on antibiotics. That didn´t work for long.
So he had the actual abcess capsule removed 3-4 weeks ago(I don´t remember the actual date).
The new abcess is not in the same exact spot as the old one, but close to, or on the place he was cut open/sewn together..

The new one(if it is an abcess at all- it hasn´t drained)

I don´t think he is now.(he got an injection that lasted for either two or three weeks).
But oral meds did no good either.

If its just a small lump and not bothering him, keep an eye on it. The body may reabsorb fluid if its that or resolve on its own. Just watch and wait. It doesn't look serious to me at this point.

He was in for a checkup on the 26th and everything was perfectly fine then.
The surgery was exactly a month ago today when I look into my papers.

It seems like it keeps growing :(
one or two days ago it was the size of half a small pea..

If its an abscess it will surface on its own, there's nothing to do at this point.

I´ve figured that.. But is there anything I haven´t already done that can get rid of it so it don´t grow back over and over again?

Most don't recur if treated properly. Lets see if this one bursts and is taken care of with flushing the first time.

That is sooooo weird!!! My Mac has the EXACT same issue. First, a recurring abcess on the lower thigh that occured in late Fall, then another one on the stomach, that was first believed to be a tumor, but that we tried to drain just to see - and the vet removed A LOT of pus. Plus this one is connected to his penis (possibly by the uretra, as Lilspaz mentioned), when I flush it with sterile desinfectant, some of it comes out by the penis. I really am curious to see what else comes out of this thread!

Out of curiosity, how old is Stefan? My Mac is now about 25 months.

My Stefan was one year late December.
The old one at least, was not really connected to anything, if I remember correctly.

I really hope it goes away permanently..
The first one or two times, I had a different vet(it was the weekend and he stopped eating completely so I had no time).
The vet I have is one of the best in the country.
I flushed it until I couldn´t get anymore out, but maybe I did a bad job, I don´t know :sad3:

UPDATE:
The vet believes it´s not really abcesses, but prostatecysts(?) or something like that, that gets inflamed..
He felt that surgery will do no good, because it will just come back either there, or somewhere else.
He is now on 40 days of baytril to try to kick it in the butt.. The first time Baytril helped for a while(the only med that´s worked), so maybe the duration of medication has been too short..
I hope it works, because that´s really the last option..
If it don´t work, he´s either getting pts, or being medicated with antibiotics if he starts losing weight or won´t eat..

The vet also said that the best way to stop it completely, would be a neuter. But he already is neutered..
I don´t know what to do if this don´t work :sad3:
