Hi, new rat owner here. I own a pair of rats (one from a family owned pet store that breeds their own rats, and the other from petco [one of the rats I got as a pair from the family owned pet store passed away recently, so I made sure that the old rat would not be lonely. This was before I found out that there is a breeder near me]).

Minion was bought at a small family owned pet store near where I come from, and was going to be driving through there and I knew they had rittens. I thought this would be preferable over getting an old surly rat who I am illequipt to handle. I picked out two; a male (friend called first choice of what animal i would be getting, since I owed her a favor) fully intending to have him neutered before he could leave his mark (oopsies) and a female who I named Minion.

The first rat passed away when he escaped from his cage and decided to come snuggle with me, to my distress.

Thus I picked up a petco rat (despite knowing that they are not necessarily the best choice, but I had no idea that there were breeders and rescues in the surrounding area)

For a good week and a half, everything was rainbows and ponies.

So, my rat Minion (who may also be pregnant, likely from the male I had) is making sounds that allude to a respiratory infection. Mostly just "chuckles" or slightly wet breathing. And this is only on occasion. She will huffle for a few minutes then go back to regular breathing, almost like a coughing spasm or an asthma attack. I do not have a lot of money right now for vet trips, and am wondering if I can get antibiotics over the counter/over the internet for rats. The other question here is if it would be a good idea. (Generally, what should I do based on the limited money I have. I have to pay rent still, but would rather not have my rats die)

Here are some pictures:

And Hipster, trying to make the great escape back to her cage.

Both sneeze a fair amount, but Minion is the only one who seems to be showing major signs of distress.

What should I do?

This is a hard one to answer. Your sick rat is in dire need of medical care. Not only is she very sick, but she could be pregnant which is even more taxing on her body.
Any chance you can borrow money from a family member so you can bring her to the vet? There isn't anything at all over the counter that will help her. How long ago was she put with the male? If she is soon to deliver, that could send her over the age and kill her. The babies won't survive without their mom.

If she is pregnant, it would have happened on the 5th. I intend to take her to the petco vet (only exotic animal vet I know of in town) today to see what can be done. A friend offered to help pay for medication since she has mice and has become attached to my little furballs.

Do you know how old the rats are? If they are still very young, chances are they didn't do anything.
So she's got another week to go. Make sure the vet knows she could be pregnant since some meds can't be given.
I'm glad she's seeing a vet, it could literally save her life.
Good luck!

The original two were about 4 weeks when I got them (approximating from size, the person at the pet shop was not very knowledgeable, and could not give me a more definite age), putting Minion at 9 weeks when potential conception occured (I actually did see them go at it, but I know she might have been too young to conceive). The reason I think she might be pregnant due to her getting heavier around the middle than my other rodent as well as protruding nipples. If she does have babies, I do have homes for them and would not mind an additional two myself to round out my rodent family.

I called petco, and unfortunately, I was misinformed about when their exotics vet will be in. Earliest she can be seen is next Tuesday :/

Next Tuesday is quite a while away. Rats can go downhill very fast.

There must be other vets in your area that would see her.

Nine weeks old is definitely not too young to conceive. I hope it's a small litter, it's very hard to find good homes for rats.
