I came out this morning to say hi to my boys and girls, and noticed my boy Remington was limping, and not using his right rear leg. I took him out of his cage and he had the leg pulled up and the toes were kind of curled up. We put him on the floor for a bit to make sure he could walk around. HE walks around fine, albeit a bit slow. We checked him thoroughly and couldn't find any skin issues i.e. scabs, bite marks etc. The only thing we could find was some yellowish stained fur on his his right front shoulder. His left leg however is very tender to the touch and he yells when you grab or even touch it. HELP!

It could just be a sprain, rats get sprained legs all the time.

You could try to get him into the vet for some Metacam if it seems to be bothering him a lot. But if it's just a sprain, it should clear up on it's own!

metacam would be good as it will help with his pain and will also help with any inflamation.

Thank you! We actually have some metacam for our dogs already. I looked up dosage and it said to give 0.5 mg twice a day for rats. does this sound right?

Make sure it's not expired.

You need your rat's weight, and the concentration of the metacam, to calculate a proper dosage.

I have only ever given medicam once a day....
I am sure he will be great in a day or two....they heal so fast.

I too have never given it more than once a day and for my ratties it has always been such a tiny amount (like only 0.1 cc once a day) so I would still suggest checking with a vet.

My girl Momma Rat (Abby) had a sprained knee once! ..she was limping around, so we took her to the vet, she got some meds ..I'm not sure of the name but she took it every second day. Within a week she was better :)

This happened to Cain just a few weeks ago.. I came home and his right back leg was curled up right against his belly, he hopped everywhere..he let us touch it but he seemed aggitated. it didnt seem swollen or anything until the next day it was twice its normal size.. by the 3-4th day he was walking on it again, limping a lot but walking on it atleast.. the swelling took a while to go down but after about a week he was walking completly normal again.
